Just Plain Awful

I love comic books, and I have been reading them for 30 years. I Enjoy many reiterations of comics and graphic novels in animated television series, films, live action films, etc. This was definitely one of the worst animated adaptations of any super-hero genre story I have ever seen. I wish I had just used Pirate Bay to get a copy, as it is I bought it for 75% off at Circuit City, so it wasn't that much damage for such a useless product. I cannot even justify giving to my younger less discerning family members as it is extremely violent and gory for movies of it's type. Too bad.

reply

I will grant that the adapation suffers from its short running time. So, have you read the original graphic novel/miniseries by Darwyn Cooke, Chris? If so, what did you think of that?

"If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" - The Joker

reply

Read the miniseries. The animated movie was okay, but they removed the teeth and edge that were there in the comic version for the most part. Disappointing but not awful.

reply

"I love DC comics!" Famous last words. This movie is too gory for kids and too childish for adults. Fanservice gone wrong in my opinion.

reply

You are probably right. I liked it, but it was more of a nostalgia trip (even though I prefer the original JLA and not a retrofitted origin story) becuase of the reasonably accurate retelling of Hal/GL getting the ring from Abis Sur, and the inclusion of Carrol Ferris.

I disliked partly using The Flash as comic relief. That is not my recollection of Barry Allen.

How is it too gory for kids? Kids watch horror and action movies with way more gore. My five year old niece was watching pet cemetery with us last night and she thought it was hilarious.

reply

should've did a JSA. Hawkman smashing bad guys faces in wouldve been priceless

reply

HUH? the movie is amazing I am watching it as we speak for the 3rd or 4th time. I also just finished reading the Series it is based on and this were even better. But the movie is still awesome

So this is how Liberty dies, With thunderous applause.

reply

I thought this was really cool actually. It lost a little teeth, but still had some. It could have been a little longer as I thought the movie just jumped forwards at a rocket's pace.
Really blown away by this flick. Don't know what you were expecting.

reply

Agreed. I really enjoyed it as well. In a world where studios are trying to pass crap-on-a-plate off as superhero movies I thought this was light years ahead of most of the live action stuff. I hope it makes enough sales and gets enough acclaim to convince the higher ups to make more movies like this.

reply

The only thing I found hard to swallow was Green Arrow popping up and wanting to "help". LOL

If he hadn't had an arrow-plane he'd have been totally useless.

What's a bow and arrow going to do against mutant dinosaurs?

reply

To me Batman just kinda fell out of the plot. Didn't like that. Another thing I didn't like is the voice casting. Andrea Romano usually does a good job. I'm used to the JL/JLU voices from the animated series and this must've been a kick in the face for that cast to not be called back in.

Batman: Gotham Knight showed a lot more of what DC Comics can actually do when they try. They kept Kevin Conroy for that.

I knew Wonder Woman was thick but has she ever been this thick or arrogant before?

reply

Not really. We all knew this wasn't tied any way to JL/JLU so there was no need to bring in the same voice actors.

I'm a big fan of marvel and the Marvel Utimate avengers movies, althought the 2nd one wasn't that great. I was assuming I'd like DC take on a cartoon movie especially with some many kool superheoroes in Justice league...

5 min into it, I knew it was going to suck and was gonna be a big mess. The animation looks like its from the 70-80. Just because its set in 1950 doesn't mean that the animation has to suck so bad. The story is (big surprise) about alien and it keep gong from one super hero to another, then 5 min later to another and they try to link it all up to make sense...didn't work.

Batman's voice is wierd, the green lantern has 5 min of screen time, all male characters have the same square jaw face. ITs just 1 big mess and I was falling asleep. DC Has to raise the bar. Marvel's animation movie are visually incredible and fun to watch. This movie is not worth watching and a BIG Dissapointment. I can't beleive it got 7.2/10. I gave it a 2, its the worst comic book movie I've ever watch. The Wonder Woamn movie was better than this!!!

reply

Sorry but you are wrong, DC is winning in the animation department when going against marvel. Espcially since DC has Bruce Timm on their side.

Have to agree, the DC/WB guys have done an overall better job with their animated DVDs than the Marvel/Lionsgate guys. The Marvel/Lionsgate guys are particularly inept with handling the Mighty Thor, as indicated by "Hulk Vs. Thor".

Also have to agree that the Doomsday DVD wasn't that good. It felt more like an experiment with the format than an actual attempt to tell a good story. A friend of mine, who I shall not name, frustrates me by insisting that Doomsday is better simply because "they advertised a Superman story" and felt that New Frontier was too much about Hal Jordan. Granted, I don't think she likes Hal very much.

Looking back on this, IMO both Marvel and DC's direct to video lines leave me wishing for far better.

I have high hopes for when i watch Trapped in Time, might be the first of these from either company i'm actually impressed with by the sound of it

Gamefaqs has a far worse population than IMDB

reply

Give me a better DC animated movie (besides the first Batman-Superman movie.)

That was the only one better than this.

reply

I watched this and crisis on two earths back to back, the latter being far superior.

reply

This was probably the worst DC animated movie ive seen thus far.
