I wish Hollywood would make an actual Justice League movie!

I would love to see an actual Justice League movie instead of an animated film! Thoughts?

The George Miller-helmed, live-action Justice League movie is presently in "production hell." It probably won't get made until it gets at least another rewrite and a new cast and/or director.

I'm kind of glad that it is in Development Hell for now (Development Purgatory maybe?).

The last treatment I read about sounded awful. There would have been no Superman or Batman in it. I think it was supposed to deal with the aftermath of the Death of Superman and how the remaining members of the Justice League would have tried to cope. I don't want Justice League without Superman.

I think before they even think of a Justice League movie, they should do what Marvel is doing: Introduce the Heroes in their own Individual Films. Little crossovers here and there to show that they all exist in the same Universe, then unveil the Justice League Movie.

But there's a problem. I don't think you can honestly have a decent Justice League Movie without Superman and Batman. And, since those franchises have been going on for a while, I don't think they'll be doing any crossovers. Plus, the recent Batman movies by Nolan have been focusing on a "Realistic" Batman and I don't think they would want to introduce the more "out there" Leaguers like Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and others.

Most likely, in terms of the Justice League, they'll probably stick to the DTV releases like New Frontier.

If you have access to the first few JLA comics circa 1961/62, DC pretty much left out Superman and Batman, by making them "honourary members" (a bit like Snapper Carr, except he was in every issue.)

The reason for this was to shine lights on DC's lesser heroes - The Atom, Green Arrow, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and a bit later Hawkman. Wonder Woman, Plash and GL were the real stars of the early JLA issues.

They later realised that this was a mistake and Supes and Batman became major players in the JLA.

A JLA live movie would be a mistake, I think. Too many heroes that I would want to see, and not enough time to give any of them decent airtime, or indeed any decent backstory. And many of them are unknown to modern filmgoers

Plus you would need a super villain worthy of going head to head with the greatest DC universe heroes of all time (and also give HIM/HER/IT a decent backstory). Can anybody think of a supervillain worthy of taking on the entire (original) JLA in a full length movie?

I really believe it cannot be done. Marvel can do it better, as their heroes were all flawed in one way or another, and the heels can exploit their weaknesses. The DC heroes, aspecially those in the original JLA were "perfect".

That's why I feel they need to introduce each hero in his / her own film first and then bring them all together into one film. It would take a long time, but I think the payoff would be worth it.

As for the Villian, why should it be just one? If you introduce each hero in their own movie, they will have to have their own villian / antagonist to fight against. Each Villian from those movies could then come together to form an "Injustice Gang" or "Legion of Doom" or whatever. Then that would be what brings the heroes together to form the Justice Leauge.

In other Justice Leauge appearances, it's been some sort of Cosmic or Unearthly Being that caused the Justice League to come together, so you can bypass the character development by just making it a really large being or group of beings. In Justice League: New Frontier, it was "The Centre", while in the Justice League animated series, it was a race of shape shifting aliens with a very "War of the Worlds" feel. In the comics it was "Starro the Conquerer", but I think most would agree that the concept of a cosmic starfish is a little "out there" to bring the Justice League together.

I think if you introduce these heroes in their own live action film, then a Justice League Feature won't be far off:

Wonder Woman,
Green Lantern,
Flash,
Aquaman,
Martian Manhunter

Superman and Batman are already very well known, so they really don't need "establishing" films. You could also throw in some others like Green Arrow or Black Canary, but those Core heroes mentioned above would be sufficient enough to start a Justice League film franchise.

They're trying/in the process.

It'll never happen though, to be honest. I wouldn't bet money on it, that is.

WB/DC had their chance to launch a new independent DC movie franchise with 'Justice League: Mortal'. Maybe it'll still happen, but I doubt it. Too bad.

I don't see the need for solo movies prior to a Justice League movie. These characters are well known worldwide, even the "second stringers" like Flash and Green Lantern have some exposure. None of these heroes need any kind of detailed origin story for audiences to care about them, or their current adventure.

All it takes is good writing, a respect for the source material, and responsible backing from the studio, all of which seldom come together happily in Hollywood.

A Justice League movie would also be the perfect launch point for those solo movies fans want. You "introduce" them in 'The Justice League', with just enough back story for the lesser knowns, but leave enough open for "prequel" solo sequels to fill in the familiar comic book origins.

Release 'Justice League', then 'Green Lantern' and Flash, then 'Justice League II', followed by 'Wonder Woman' and ... I dunno ... 'Green Arrow' or even 'Aquaman', then another JL, and then do new Superman and Batman movies, following in the new continuity.

This would still leave Nolan/Bale fans their last film, and then the rest of us can move on to something new, a little more fun, yet not camp.

Everyone thinks that Marvel has "got it right", but so far, only 'Iron Man' was a huge success, there is as yet no sequel to compare, no 'Thor', no 'Captain America', no 'Giant/Ant Man', and only a tepid Hulk rendition. There is no guarantee that any of those solo set-up films will succeed, and no certainty that 'Avengers' will draw in TDK- or even Iron Man-like numbers.

It could all fall apart with just one bad film.

Oh, don't misread me.

I'm not a Marvelite, but I do respect their game plan. I think it sucks that WB/DC is playing catch up using the competition's own tactics, as if it's the only way to proceed. It isn't, as I've indicated. It's sad, since WB have had these characters for decades and did *beep* all with 'em.

That's kind of what I'm saying with a Justice League film. With one well crafted movie, they could establish the entirety of the DCU, the "mechanics" of how things work (relationships between Science, Magic, Religion, Etc.), set the overall tone of the "continuity" (serious, light-hearted, action-oriented, moralizing, ...), the cinematic interpretation (always allowing for later directors to fit in their own visions), all of it, with one shot.

That would open up the whole DC catalog to film adaptation. DC comics could be spun off into DC Comics Studios, producing long running movie and tv series, live action and animated.

Ah ... to dream.

it will never be made, it will cost to much money to make with a budget likely needed of about 400-500 million dollars.
When you think about the CGI needed with Green Lantern, Man Martian, Flash wonder woman and others, no one would give that amount to a director.

reply

I wonder if Joss Whedon had been allowed to do the Wonder Woman movie (and it succeeded), would he have directed the Justice League film instead of The Avengers?

The Avengers film showed a Justice League film is possible if the right ingredients (script, actors, directing, etc.) are there.
