Maddening. I wish more people had died in it.

I literally cheered out loud when Charles was shot. It would have only been better if he had then aimed that pocket pistol at Ludivine Sagnier in the audience, masterfully taking her out with a well placed shot between the eyes, only to then turn the pistol on himself. The movie could end that way, and I would have been happy.

I love French cinema, and I love Ludivine Sagnier, and she's the reason I bothered to watch this movie in the first place.

The most maddening aspect of this movie was the fact there was virtually no ramp up in the relationships between characters. After a scant few scenes together, Gabrielle is so madly in love with Charles she goes into a catatonic state after he breaks up with her. And Paul is madly in love with Gabrielle after approximately nothing happens between them. The sheer absurdity of these situations made me curse several times.

One of the most annoying aspects of the movie is that Charles is set up to be some kind of geriatric super-stud with supernatural charm. He was nothing of the sort. He was simply despicable, and it wasn't in the realm of my imagination that could see him picking up an attractive twentysomething woman. Ludivine's character Gabrielle was also utterly stupid and inane, and just written oddly.

Three thumbs down. That's right, three.

The characters were anaemic, weren't they? The weakest element was the actor cast as Charles who was neither attractive nor charismatic and had no dialogue that was witty or sparkled. The man playing Gabrielle's uncle had more screen presence.

Second weakest was Sagnier as Gabrielle. She doesn't play the snow female defiled very well. There was no change or development. I saw L'Ennui last night with Sophie Guillemin, she would have been better as the ingenue corrupted.
