The 'playhouse'
Or the men's club... whatever you want to call it. Would women really find this as a suitable birthday present?

share Did I miss something or was this scene cut when older lover takes her to the private club at 3 AM ? This was supposedly a birthday surprise BUT what really happened, if anything,
when he took her up the wooden spiral staircase ? I suspect this scene was cut !
I'm sure the scene wasn't cut - it was made clear from what was said later in the film what had gone on upstairs in the club, and there was really no need to show it explicitly.

Would women really find this as a suitable birthday present? That's really what the whole film hinges upon -- that there are some people, very damaged people, who DO, in fact, find that sort of degradation and humiliation suitable. It's what makes the character of Gabrielle so frustrating, and compelling. Why would someone so beautiful and loving feel the need to be degraded and humiliated by the man she truly loves? It's a sad, but unfortunately valid, statement of the human condition for some people.
