Paul and Charles before Gabrielle

I think the first scene with both Paul and Charles was in the bookstore, but did I miss why they didn't like each other before their rivalry over Gabrielle, or was that not explained?

It wasn't explained. Paul seemed jealous of Charles's popularity and contemptuous of his success and Charles was sneering of Paul and his place in society.

It wasn't really explained, but it seemed to me that even though Paul himself was vain, shallow, and somewhat vacuous, he seemed to have genuine feelings for Gabrielle (along with a lot of questionable son-mother issues), whereas Charles was just a total schmuck. And Paul seemed to be able to see through Charles' facade more/better than most others.
