I was sorely disappointed... and annoyed
It seemed that when compiling this list they were just looking for splatter porn, horror/comedy and threw in some odd inclusions of weak, contemporary horror. The moment Eli Roth said that Dead/Alive quenched his thirst for blood and that it was "the greatest movie" he ever saw, this little TV special lost what little credibility it began with. One poster was correct when s/he said they were confusing gross with scary. It's one thing to gross somebody out, but it's another thing for a movie to get under your skin, make your hair stand up, tap into your psyche and truly frighten you.
Most of the guest speakers wouldn't know scary if it bit them in the ass and clearly they don't, as they had their hand in some recent "horror" movies that were not all that great. Basically I saw this special as these filmmakers just giving themselves a pat on the back, trying to make themselves feel better about the lackluster films they released upon us. Not to mention the fact that they were not very articulate in their interviews and tried to make these movies appear intellectual, allegorical, and symbolic.
I think I heard one of the girls say, "What makes this movie so scary is that you never know what's going to happen next." Isn't that true of any spectacular horror movie (which hardly any of these were)? Be. More. Specific.
Rob Zombie (referring to the new Dawn of the Dead): "The fast-moving zombies add a whole other thing... like... you're screwed!"
Some douchebag (referring to Red Eye): "Wes Craven can take a goofy pen like this and make it scary!" Anyone remember that little goblin pen? Rachel McAdams used it to stab Cillian Murphy with the throat. There was no subtext behind it, it wasn't really a plot catalyst, this guy is retarded.
Slither? Army of Darkness? Red Eye? Saw 2? Hostel? The Exorcism of Emily Rose? The Grudge? Christine? Cabin Fever? Wolf Creek? Land of the Dead? Open Water? REALLY?! 13 of the movies were from the last 5 years and there hasn't been a really decent horror movie since The Ring remake.
Any cheeky, self-aware, self-referential, slaptstick horror/comedy that TRIES to be a cult classic should have been deemed ineligible.
I'm aware these lists are to be taken with a grain of salt (though I still love them and find them entertaining because I adore cinema) but damn, this list is in insult to the idea of movie lists.
Aw *beep* nuts. Fed up with them always. I long for a grapefruit.
