How is it that Bruno and Bonnet were the same rank?

Both Bruno and Bonnet were lieutenants but I found it surprising that they were the same rank, considering their age difference. Also, Bruno comes from an upper class military family, so how is it that he has served 4 years and was still just a lieutenant? Shouldn't he have risen higher by that time?

Bruno is much, much, younger in the book (about 24 or so). Lucile is about 21/22. Bonnet is supposed to be 19 or thereabouts.

What a strange casting choice. Both Bruno and Lucile look older, as if they were in their late twenties or early thirties.
