I was blown away by him. I've seen him in many movies(Bullhead, Rust and Bone, A little Chaos, etc) not very impressed, but he delivered the best performance in this.

shareI actually think his roles in Bullhead and Rust and Bone are his best, but he does give his all in every movie I've seen (Death of a Shadow, Blood Ties, The Drop, A Little Chaos, Far from the Madding Crowd). Phenomenal actor!
shareReally commendable acting by Michelle Williams as well. She and Matthias had great chemistry together. Like you said, this was indeed a very cliché storyline so I was incredibly surprised by how captivating it actually was. Michelle Williams doesn't get enough credit for her acting. She's not a conventionally beautiful as some of her contemporary actresses so maybe she gets somewhat sidelined because of that, which is too bad b/c her talent for emotional nuance is really exceptional.
shareI thought they worked well together, but the script more than anything lacked the passion IMO, insofar as to cause individuals to contemplate what might be viewed as traitorous behaviour.🐭
