RIP: Actress Monica Marko 1919-2016 Age: 97

Monica Marko died Wednesday, August 10, after a brief illness, at Peace Arch Hospital, where she had been in residence at the Hogg Pavilion for the past year. Monica was born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England and immigrated with her family to Canada just before WWII. Drawn to the stage, she attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. She briefly was a contract player at Universal Studios and later went on to work as one of Canada's first film makeup artists. In 1949, she met and married Michael Marko in Vancouver, and they moved to Toronto. During her marriage, Monica worked for Helena Rubenstein Cosmetics and also had a beauty and comportment studio. Widowed in 1963, Monica returned to the cosmetics industry for some years before she began her next career teaching children's improvisational drama, which she continued to do after moving to Vancouver in 1975. In the mid '80s, she returned to acting for film and television landing character roles in Vancouver-shot productions working well into her eighth decade. Even in recent years, Monica maintained involvement with theatre by volunteering as a drama teacher at the White Rock Seniors Centre. She is survived by one son, a daughter and two grandchildren.
