Did you make it to the end?

This movie touches on interesting topics but just meanders till the end. A glance at this forum finds questions not answered, why Charlize Theron left, why the missing thumbs, etc. It's as if the editing were random.

Were you able to finish in 1 continuous viewing? I started web surfing in the middle.

reply

Well, it's a film for adults, and even all adults don't care for it, but most of those say it's just too bleak and sad. But surfing in the middle of the film doesn't say much that is positive about your atention span.

Still, maybe when you grow up a bit...

Still, maybe when you grow old...

reply

Figures. As I said, when you grow older...not necessarily a synonym for "old," despite what many young people think. I recall being there, myself. But that period of one's life does pass, and some folks even manage to notice their own changes and appreciate the different tastes adulthood brings.

Others -- not so much. Their loss. I think it's a horrid notion, myself: TV-sitcom-humor and blockbuster superhero movies forever. (I don't have an emoticon for "shudder.")

reply

I bet you're a real hoot at parties.

Childish, gratuitous insult.

reply

Her Excellency,

You should listen to your royal advisors (I presume from your title you do hold some high inherited office?) They will explain to you the difference between "childish, gratuitous insult(s)" and observations from an adult who has no malice toward the young and no fear of your wrath or power. I'm even trying to encourage young people to hurry up and start thinking like grownups.

It's an uphill battle.

All mature people are adults, but not all adults are mature people.

Leave "project mimesis" to someone who knows the difference between a childish insult and the Socratic method.

reply

True. You got something right. I'm very impressed. Maybe when you reach the lofty plateau of maturity, if you ever do, you will recognize where you are. Good luck. Keep climbing.

I must have been watching another movie

Hideki Tojo does that, he could be looking at something on the desk and then just loses interest, he studies his castle for a little bit or maybe the little bright green diver then just flips around and finds something new to occupy himself. Hideki Tojo is my goldfish.

You don't know sh!t, Jon Snow!

Charlize's character just gives up, she says as much, that surviving is not enough, she doesn't want to keep struggling. Wandering off is as good a way to commit suicide as any, she's lost all hope and doesn't care anymore, she has nothing to look forward to.

Missing thumbs - I assume you're talking about the thief who takes their cart? I don't remember how but in the book it's implied he was kicked out of a commune for stealing or something and cutting fingers off is a common form or punishment for thieves in many societies, past and present.

I guess it does meander but the purpose of the story is to examine The Man's drive to survive, motivated by the love he has for his son, under unspeakable circumstances. It makes us ask ourselves: would we just give up like Charlize, or carry on like The Man?

I watched until the instant the credits started rolling then I couldn't switch off the TV fast enough. I had had the remote in my hand practically the whole way through, wondering if the extremely slow pace would pick up a bit. But it's certainly one of the most boring movies I've watched recently.

reply

I bet you were thinking "Whoa, I really wish I'd picked something intellectually stimulating like Transformers instead. I wouldn't go crazy at the video store again!"

Ya Kirk-loving Spocksucker!

reply

Yes i did, several times.

reply

I made it all the way to the end. I found this film to be quite grim, poignant, and haunting.
