Are there any Americans in this American movie about America?

Oh yeah right - Robert Duvall. For about 10 seconds.

Stunt casting for the win!!!

Viggo Mortensen is of danish descent, but he was born in New York, which makes him American, too.

Also,

Michael Kenneth Williams, was born in New York. So he is an American, as well.

reply

LOL - good catch about Viggo. My bad!

Still too many non American actors playing American characters.

reply

With all due respect, what difference does it make?

reply

Well, the 1959 version of On the Beach had American actors pretending to be Australian.

So in this case it's not that strange to have Australian actors playing Americans in a film set in America, directed by an Australian.

...and Mary Poppins.

Never forgive America...:P

I have THREE black belts in FULL ON PSYCHO!

The difference is American actors don't speak in bad fake American accents. No Aussie has ever been able to pull off a genuinely believable American accent just like no American actor has pulled off a believable Aussie accent. There are millions of American wannabe actors in America and a lot of them are very good so why are we giving American roles to non Americans?

This is not a 'patriot' complaint - it's just a dumb idea to have people who aren't American and who don't understand America and Americans playing Americans when there are plenty of great American actors available. It's stunt casting by casting directors who think Aussie accents are 'exotic' and we feel flattered that Aussies want to be Americans so bad. It's so cute.

I remember watching a British TV series years ago called Press Gang. One of the characters was an American called Spike, played by the British actor Dexter Fletcher. When I watched the series I didn't know at the time that the actor who played Spike wasn't really American.

There was one episode of Press Gang where a plan was put forward to make a television series about Spike and his love interest Lynda Day. The one who came up with the idea said, "Dont worry, Spike, we'll get a genuine American to play you." As an ironic in-joke, it worked. 

Film makers cannot afford to make films in the USA any more. Besides all be best actors are British or Australian.

reply

Yeah, right

Ever heard of Pacino, Nicholson, DeNiro or Brando?

Regardless of their present careers(or deaths, in Brando's case), those guys are all iconic and some of the best actors ever. There are great actors everywhere but to say the "best ones are.." is absolutely ridic

reply

It's not stunt casting, do you think directors aim for accents that someone will question? It's just the result of American actors being greedy *beep* *beep* who think they deserve 5 million per film because they once advertised milk when they were 10.

Until American actors stop holding TV shows to ransom for 1 million dollars per episode and until American actors start demanding reasonable paychecks instead of 8 figure sums for a non-starring role then American producers will look further afield where the talent is the same if not better, but the rampant greed doesn't exist.

The big downside to being so super-capitalist that you make the next economy look socialist is that there are 7 billion other people out there whose demands are not so high.

Ya Kirk-loving Spocksucker!

Only American Indians are Americans. Whites are from Europe and Blacks from Africa. Don't mention it.

You mean, America the Continent?
