That family following the kid couldn't bother to lend a hand?

Anybody think it was odd that the family on the beach that were stalking the kid didn't lift a damn finger when that black guy came along and stole all their stuff? Really?

They claimed they were watching them all that time and there were five of them and only one black starving guy.

Maybe they figured if they lost all their stuff then the dad would be more willing to let them take the kid with them?

I don't understand it either. Maybe they thought that the dad would have attacked them because he was getting more desperate and dangerous. He barely trusted the old man and would have avoided him if it weren't for his son's desire to help.

When I read the book I didn't get the impression that the author was trying to give us a realistic scenario more than he wanted to show how humanity would respond emotionally and morally to a doomed situation. It seemed more like a parable than anything else.

I cried when I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet. And then I laughed...really hard.

We have no idea how far away they were while observing the Man and Boy. It stand to reason they were far away enough not to be seen easily and also they had no idea how risky the situation with the balck theif was. Also if the Man was becoming more dangerous they may have thought that they would attacked on sight by the Man. They had their own child to think of as well.

They were as frightend if not more so than the Boy and Man.

People on the board seem to be assuming that the family at the end was real-perhaps they were a fevered imaging of the dying boy at the end, after his father had died-it certainly makes more sense than suddenly coming across the perfect nuclear family! The situation can be seen as backfilling what had happened earlier ie the dog at the end was the dog that discovered the underground bunker but what if the kid's delusion made it be so in his mind?

Speaking of the black theif did you notice he didn't have thumbs and nether did the man at the end with the family?

reply

They were definitely following for quite a while considering that family little boy is the same boy that was outside of the fathers house where he grew up and then the dog means they were also at the bomb shelter... I'm just confused as hell about all the missing thumbs, I have some theories but they're only just theories.
