Why do they always have a fire at night if they fear being found by cannibals? If I feared being discovered the last thing I would do is have a campfire at night. Did they always have a campfire in the book or was it just added in the movie for effect?

They lit campfires in the book. It's been a while since I read the book, but if I remember correctly, I think they would screen the fire off with a tarp or something. They took care not to make themselves noticeable, anyway.
