That wasn't in the book


When the Thief appears, he is shown with stubs for thumbs. That wasn't in the book. When the man and woman at the end who takes in the boy show up, they seem to be missing part of their thumbs too. That also wasn't in the book. I'm not saying its stupid since it wasn't in the book, I'm just wondering about it because it was something the movie added. Is it supposed to mean something? Is there supposed to be a connection between the Thief and the family?

The Thief's mutilation was a little different. In the novel, he was missing his fingers ("His hand looked like a fleshy spatula", or something like that, per the novel).

It made no mention about the Veteran's hand in the novel, only that his face was messed up, that it gave him a speech impediment, affected his voice, or something like that.

I think they changed to movie, to add a little mystery: is he or isn't he...?
