What does Leonard see in Penny?

I have watched anywhere from half to two thirds of all the episodes in any given season, bar one or two in the last few years, and I just don't get why Leonard wants her. They have almost nothing in common, she's vacuous, empty, in high school was a female version of the macho bullies who picked on Leonard and his friends and as an adult isn't very nice either.

Is it really just because she's hot? If so, how is Leonard any different from the macho jocks he thinks he's so much better than?

reply

She's hot.

reply

Gee, thank you for that in-depth, thoughtful, lucid, eloquent, and thoroughly fascinating insight!

reply

No worries!

reply

I can do it better.......she is very hot.

reply

Just because Leonard is smart, that does not mean he is any different. He still has low self esteem and physical attraction has nothing to do with intellect.

Just like there are scientists believe in God. Any rational person of science is not supposed to believe in God, because that is not something can be proven. But believing in God or religion in general I think is an emotional need, again has nothing to do with intellect.

reply

Lenny is also a major Simp and knows he is batting out of his league with Penny so he is hardly going to give her up.

reply

I am offended by your post here. That is a fascist thing to say. People with your bigoted way of thinking are why America is going to have another Civil War.

As for the topic, I think it's more that Penny is aware she shouldn't have dated those other guys. She knows Leonard is different and wants to care for her.

reply

I don't think you understand either character.

reply

I don't think you understand either character.
Then explain them both to me.

reply

Leonard doesn't think he is better than the jocks who would usually have penny, he just knows he's different. Penny isn't shallow or empty she is also smart in her own way and appreciates being loved.

reply

Penny isn't shallow or empty she is also smart in her own way
What way is that?

reply

Street smart. EQ smart. She is a good person.

reply

Nearly all relationships begin with shallow superficial reasons. The ones that last transcend that .

Nearly all relationships begin with shallow superficial reasons.

That didn't happen to my wife and me, but that covers the vast majority of relationships. Brilliant insight.

reply

What happened to your wife and you?

reply

Nothing. Married almost 40 years now and she's the very best part of my life. What I meant is that our relationship didn't start on shallow superficial reasons, which is quite common and make sense from a human evolution standpoint.

With regards to my wife specifically, she is physically nothing like the type of female that appeals to me or the type I would typically date. I like women tall and athletic - I did when I was 21 and I still do at 64. My wife is neither. But she is a beautiful soul and is perfect for me. We spend most of our spare time together and laugh every single day. Thank God I had the sense to recognize her amazing qualities early. Some men never learn that lesson and keep chasing the supermodels (my brother always did this and always had relationship issues).

reply

I see.
Well, good for both you and your wife.
Cheers!

reply

strntz- Your wife sounds like a very lucky woman! I envy her. She obviously made a good choice too in finding someone who respected her and treasured her. Wish I had possessed the same good sense.
I thought my ex possessed some fine qualities when we dated. But I overlooked obvious red flags. I made excuses. He was smart, a physician. And I assumed at the very least he was compassionate and cared about people. WRONG! He was only in medicine for the money he thought he could make. I realized too late that he only faked caring and compassion. I made excuses for his abusive behavior.

Back to TBBT, Penny was the epitome of the pretty and popular girl in high school who never gave Leonard the time of day. Or else, if she did pay him some attention, it was only to get him to do her homework!

I do think Penny was at the height of her looks in the first two seasons. She looked best with the very blonde, long hair. Short hair did nothing for her, as Kaley Cuoco said herself.
Very few women are actually gorgeous. Penny was pretty enough for Leonard to snag. I mean, do women who look like Charlie's Angels go for his type? Well maybe if the guy is rich enough. Or how else do you explain Paulina Porizkova and Ric Ocasek? lol

If I was Leonard I would've been concerned about things other than Penny's temper or lack of education. She was a borderline alcoholic and she slept around a lot. "Dating" while drinking can impair good judgement. If I was Leonard, I would've insisted on a test for STDs before I got serious.

Thanks PJ, very generous of you to say so.

Let me bore you with a story.. When I was a kid, my dad worked in the service industry and I would sometimes tag along. I remember this one home where the couple just sniped at each other instead of speaking as friends. In the living room was a large picture of their wedding some 40 plus years earlier, and they were happy and beaming in the photo. I wondered how they got from that happy day to now - and that bothered me and stuck with me forever.

When I met my wife, I was in an on again- off again relationship with a girl who was my physical type. She was fun but was never my friend. I met my wife and although she wasn't "my type", I went out with her a few times as a "fall back" during the "off again" time. Well, by three months I knew I was going to marry her. She was intelligent and very funny and that uncomfortable period when dating someone new was gone almost immediately, and I looked forward to seeing her after work almost every evening. When my on again - off again girlfriend called me a few weeks later to invite me over, she was stunned when I told her we were done.

You say my wife is lucky but if you knew her, you'd know that I'm the lucky one. We've been together since 1979 and when I come home, she lights up like she did when we first started dating. Most men are lucky enough to see the love in a woman's eyes at least once, but I've been seeing it for over 40 years, and to be honest, I often feel guilty.

With regard to Leonard, he definitely fell into the cave man scenario of being physically attracted to Penny first (something that made sense a million years ago). To her credit, she did have a good heart and she grew up, something some women never do. BTW, my old on again - off again girl was married twice (divorced now). I'm friends with her on social media and she does seem to have grown up, but it took her too long.

reply

Well strntz, sounds like you and your wife are both lucky!

Your story about your wife lighting up when you get home reminds me of something I read. You probably know that the late Ann Bancroft was married to Mel Brooks. I read a comment of hers regarding her husband that was so sweet. She said that when she heard his key in the door, it was like Christmas morning. She never got over being happy to see him at the end of the day.

Couples like that are so lucky. I hope they treasure their mates. I never had it but it's nice to read that some people do.

reply

She’s damn hot!

reply

On the plus side, she's very pretty, she has a nice personality, she has a quick wit, a hard worker, and she seems to possess a good soul. She's grown up since high school which some people never do.

On the negative side, she has a fake rack and isn't up to Leonard's level in intelligence.

If they had kids, their kids would be beautiful and smart.

(And, imaginary.)

reply

" a hard worker," i missed those episodes

reply

i missed those episodes

Well, I haven't seen them all either, but then, there's no requirement to do so..

reply

With those pluses- what more do you want,?

reply

From his life experience, as a nerd, she is (physically) completely
out of his league; the kind of girl he never thought he'd have. And she wants him, too.

So, I'd say he's living out his fantasy.

That's what I thought.

Boy, he sure has matured past his high school days!*sarcasm*

reply

Is that a line from the show?

reply

I don't think so.

reply

Okie dokie then.

reply

I think the charm of the show was to show how the nerd past of these guys affected them up to the present.

Even Amy was written to be socially stunted, because she had the same type of past.

People carry baggage till they die.

reply

Plus proximity.

reply

I suppose the most important issue I have is the very fact that they have almost nothing in common. When Professor Proton visits in one of the early seasons he asks Leonard "What do you two talk about?"

And as far as I can tell, we never find out the answer.

Sure, there are situations and incidents that arise throughout the show that require Leonard and Penny to talk but I just cannot for the life of me fathom how they could do anything together for fun without it being a chore for one of them.

On this point, the one episode that bothered me the most was when it was revealed that Penny believes in ghosts, psychics, astrology, and other paranormal crap.

Leonard is a scientist who values facts and evidence above all else.

If I was him, that'd be a deal breaker for me.

reply

At least Howard and Sheldon dated and married women with whom they had things in common and were compatible.

reply

They probably dont talk much together. They spend all their alone time having sex, which Leonard obviously likes a lot. Luckily for Leonard, he has a group of friends who are always doing entertaining stuff that Penny gets to tag along with. So most of their free time is spent in a group dynamic where they are either all mocking Sheldon, amusing his thoughts, or being involved in some hairbrain scheme of the rest of the gang. When alone, it probably starts with gossip about the rest of the friends, then quickly devolves into either a fight, sex, or make up sex.

reply

I think one of the reasons they had to "smarten" her up was to make sure she could keep up with not just the guys but also the girls in the show. When she got the sales rep gig she started to earn more than Leo as well from memory.

Leonard is just a cuck though so what do you really expect? If another "hot" chick moved in across the hall instead he would be salivating over her instead.

It also has to be said that as far as hot chicks go Penny is more on the average side.

reply

Well they are first door neighbours so a lot of social interaction plus she is good looking. Pretty easy to see why he would want to be with her. I don't think Leonard has the mentality of a player where he will go out to meet different chiks.

reply

Leonard's best bet would be exactly what he tends to do. Just be around women and hope they see something of interest in him. I am a bit vague now but didn't he also have an assistant trying to hit on him (or was that Sheldon?).

There isn't anything about him that would grab a woman's interest from the outset. He is also quite short which would be his major downfall as most women like men who are taller than themselves.

reply

His biggest asset is he is very sociable and normal compared to other nerds and geeks in his business and he has a highly prestigious job and is smart.
