Evil Bernie

Wow, they're really making Bernadette evil now. Too bad for poor Howard. Is this his karma for all his bad behavior toward women?

reply

Just curious, how do you see Bernadette as evil? Last episode she was upset that while on bed rest, Ruchi is swooping in to steal her job. Bernie is not my favorite character, but I don't see her as evil.

reply

She is too good for Howard. Lucky for him he got her pregnant or she GONE!

reply

I'm not sure what it is, if Bernie is too good for Howard or whatever, but the character is just NOT as funny as a married man.

I suppose the writers thought that having him grow and mature would be a good idea, but it did nothing for the comedy aspect of the character.

I read an interview where Simon Helberg said that Howard was basically "Pepe la Pew". And we know Pepe never got the girl cat that he thought was a skunk! That's where the comedy was derived from. He chased, he wooed, he made a pest of himself, he lost her every time.

They took a character like Howard who has an inflated opinion of himself as a "ladies man" and real hot stuff(!) and married him off. Now he's been domesticated with a wife who earns more money yet still takes care of him like his mother did.

Howard is funnier when he is playing the field and getting shot down! imho

reply

I agree. That is kinda what I meant. Bernie could have anyone.

I agree completely. They're ruined all the characters with their "growth."

I'm not a proponent that "their 'nerdiness' was wonderful," but face it, the premise of the show was that they were a bunch of losers. That's where the comedy was.

Now, they've turned it into "Friends."

reply

Glad someone agrees with me! I wouldn't exactly call them losers, but the show's premise was that they were brilliant in their respective fields, yet totally lost when it came to having social lives.

Some of the funniest sitcom characters never "grew" or learned from their mistakes. Did you ever watch the old Honeymooners? Ralph had endless "get rich quick" schemes. He dragged his pal Norton into them and they all failed. He remained a bus driver living in a tenement apartment. Ed Norton remained a sewer worker. If they had gotten better jobs and moved up in the world, the characters would not be funny anymore.

I never liked the idea of Leonard and Penny getting married. Really, what do they have in common? When the show started, Penny was the hot girl with a busy social life and many boyfriends. Leonard as a boyfriend was, at the most, Penny going slumming for a while!

Supposedly they had a lot of sex. But really, after a while you have to TALK to your partner! What do they talk about? Leonard's endless insecurities that he married a woman who might leave him for a hotter guy?

Leonard pining away for Penny was funnier (and more realistic) than the two of them sharing domestic bliss. If the writers wanted to drag out the unrequited love aspect, I think Penny should've gotten engaged. But her boyfriend had to go overseas for a while because of his job. That way Leonard could still keep his hopes up.

And Sheldon getting engaged? Duh! In what universe? The character was presented as a loner who had no desire to engage with the opposite sex. His work was his mistress. There are some people like that. Sheldon as a boyfriend just isn't funny to me.

The episodes which I find funny now are the ones with just the guys. I like to pretend that they are still socially awkward and have no success with women.

Your points about Lenny & Penny are spot on.

Usually, once the protagonists of a sitcom/drama hook up, it's all downhill from there. Once the sexual tension is gone, it's no longer funny or interesting. What's funny is the chase, the losing, and the frustration.

Why is that we can see this, but the producers cannot?

Also agree about Sheldon. While I like Mayim a lot (very talented), Sheldon was a unique character, and they've made him quite boring.

reply

This is a typical show about a WAY WAY WAY too hot girl who is down to freak 24/7 with some loser who doesn't appreciate it and realize how lucky he is to hit dat ( AMY way too good for Sheldon and likes to get down, Same with Penny and Bernie)

reply

True. I've noticed it. I used to like her character a lot more. I actually don't like it now. She is always disgruntled, she's loud, she's always disrespectful and belittling and is a smart ass about everything. She currently has no redeeming qualities, only negative qualities.

reply

That's right, she was more likable when she first appeared but after she and Howard got married, she became the stereotypical bitchy sitcom wife.

reply

Howard seems to have replaced his mother with Bernadette. That seemed obvious to me when his mother was in the hospital and Bernie lit into him.

Howard is successful at his job. But this show has gone out of its way to portray him as a loser in life. He was under the thumb of his mother, now he's whipped by his wife.

I wonder what example he will be setting for his daughter Haley when she gets older. "Men are weak?"

reply

She added so much to the show last night. Her 30 seconds of bitching while on the computer screen was great. I like how Penny didn't kiss ass like weakling Howard always does. She was "you had sex with Howard, you deserve it" was good. Bernadette is unbearable now.

reply

Yeah, she's not even on the show now due to her real life pregnancy and she was still super annoying in only one 3 second line in last nights episode. You just hear her calling down out the window griping about going slow because it takes a while to get her bra back on. I've really grown to dislike her.
