Young Sheldon

TBBT has made many allusions to young Sheldon's life. Do you think the show is going to honor these or just completely ignore them?

reply

Based on experience they'll probably ignore them and make up a completely different life for him.

I can tell you based on the previews I've seen there is no way I'm ever going to watch this show.

reply

The premier looked okayish. It will be easy to check it out for a while and see how it goes.

reply

They did a reference the other night about him ordering uranium.

reply

Yes!

I seem to recall several misogynistic things being said about the father though, which probably they will discard I suppose.

reply

I forgot about this show, so I just saw it for the first time last week. Funny to see the mention of Sheldon ordering uranium.

The actress who plays Mary Cooper has enough of a resemblance to Laurie Metcalf to be believable in the role, but what really sells it is how much she sounds like her. And the character has some of the character's established opinions and religious beliefs.

In the dinner scene she tells the Vietnamese friend that Sheldon brought home that when she says grace and gets to the name of Jesus, "Feel free to say Buddha in your head."

When Tam said, "Actually I'm Catholic." and Mary Cooper replied, "Oh that's too bad", I just howled with laughter. It was so typical of her. (and yeah, I'm Catholic).

reply

You realize it's Metcalf's daughter, right?

Btw. off topic, but Star Trek Continues is having the daughter of the original Romulan commander actress play her in the current episodes.

Back to the original topic, I just remembered there's an episode of TBBT where Sheldon wants to learn how to make friends, but doesn't know how. Seems like he should already have some ideas based on this episode of Young Sheldon, where he reads Dale Carnegie and actually makes a friend.

reply

No kidding? I did NOT know that!! lol No wonder she looks and sounds like her.

Like I said, I forgot about the show and when I watched my first episode last week, the episode had started and I missed the opening credits.

Oh yes, Sheldon making friends on TBBT, that's the time he developed his "friendship algorithm" and went rock climbing with Kripke.

The Dale Carnegie book is actually a wonderful book (I have a copy), very helpful in learning to get along with family, friends, co-workers, clients, etc. Unfortunately Sheldon tried to apply the principles of the book as though it were a science manual. He just didn't "get" the human element of friendship.

reply

Yeah, pretty brilliant move to have her in that role.

Sheldon doesn't really look like either one of his parents though. Well, we haven't seen the milkman yet. ;)

Yeah, I read the book a couple years ago. A little dated, but interesting things in it. Tend to forget what it said though.

Seems like Young Sheldon will probably recap all the "Sheldon learns X" episodes of TBBT, but in the frame of a boy's life. Not sure the fans of the original show really want to see that though...

reply

And the guy playing Sheldons dad was Leonard's HS bully in TBBT

reply

Good point!

reply

I would like to see the adult Tam show up on the Big Bang Theory.

reply

That would be hilarious! It would be great if he was more successful than Sheldon and had a few scientific discoveries to his credit.

I thought the boy who plays him was so funny in the last episode. His mom made him fish soup for lunch.

"How many years to we have to be in this country before I get baloney?" lol

reply

That show sucks bad and it completely destroys the mystery of Sheldon and his youth. It's so much funnier hearing bits and pieces.
