Why does Raj . . . ?

Why does Raj wear so many clothes? They live in Southern California. I am watching it right now. Raj has on long pants, a t-shirt, long sleeve button down with collar shirt, a sweater, and a long sleeve light jacket --- INSIDE !!! What the Hell !!!

I believe this is his standard outfit.

Because it's hotter back in India.

reply

These days, I think noticing that makes you a racist.

So does laughing at this:

Yeah, those were good. As many times as I have seen reruns, I have never seen the episode where Amy and Sheldon have sex. Thank you.

reply

Priya doesn't wear all those clothes. She is from India.

The fact that they all seem quite overdressed for SoCal (except for Penny) has been a bone of contention for a few of us on the board. Each character has their own standard uniform (again, except for Penny). And all of those uniforms are long sleeved and/or layered.

That's very true. They certainly don't take advantage of the calf length socks, sneakers and shorts combination as much as they should... (My husband and his friends summer wardrobe essentials)

You know, I never noticed before. But now that you point it out, they do all dress like it's winter in Wisconsin. The only one that shows any skin is Sheldon. Usually his neck and forearms are naked. But the rest --- I guess all that sedentary, non-physical life spent not being seen as cool or popular --- mostly indoors --- makes their hearts beat slowly.

reply

Hmm, but isn't a lower (resting) pulse rate something you get with athletes and others in GOOD physical shape?

reply

Maybe so. But people with little physical activity, little self-esteem and little courage who spend most of their time indoors being afraid of social interaction often are always cold and swaddled in clothes they can hide behind.

reply

Maybe because exercise over time would increase blood flow and even produce new capillaries to supply muscles etc.

reply

Probably so.

I had not thought about that before, but it is obvious once you point it out. The whole show is a kind of fantasy pretending to be real. Caltech is a fantasy occasionally pretending to be a real university. And the writers seem to regard Pasadena as a kind of fantasy disconnected from its real climate. It seems more important to the writers to have the characters wear individually distinctive clothing than to have them wear clothing that they would actually wear in Pasadena. If you take it as a deliberate choice, rather than a screwup, it is quite interesting. The characters are their clothes, and their clothes are a constant reminder of what the characters are. It would also be a powerful affect at this point if the characters started to wear different clothes. So, whether you like what Bernie wears or not, that is Bernie.

reply

Because nerds! Look everybody, point and laugh at the nerd. *beep* this show.

Not act like he loves fashion models? His wife is Neha Kapur, an Indian model, actress and former beauty queen who won Femina Miss India in 2006 and represented India at the Miss Universe pageant that year. She is married to Raj ~ Kunal Nayyar.

TBBT is just a sitcom not meant be over analyzed in this manner.

reply

There isn't a character on there that I like their clothing choices. Sheldon comes closest.

reply

Not even the females?

reply

Not a bit. I don't know who's dressing Penny these days but I can't stand 90% of her clothes. They're worse than the slut clothes they dressed her in at the beginning. Her second wedding dress, thank goodness, was okay. Not nearly as lousy as her first one. Amy doesn't look like she's living in southern California either, although her dressy dressy are usually okay. And Bernadette's clothes just call attention to how short she is and what a big bust she has. If they dressed her in red she'd look like a fire hydrant.

reply

I agree. But the guys are supposed to be nerds. Nerds traditionally don't dress well. And Amy and Bernadette are suppose do be nerds also, especially Amy. But even Bernadette is supposed to be some kind of brainiac. And female nerds and brainiacs are not known for being fashion plates.

Penny is supposed to be a low class slut from farm country. So none of them are traditionally known for being stylish or good dressers.

Actually, I think Howard is the best dresser. He wears the best color combinations. But his clothes don't fit right. They are usually too tight. He dresses like a want-to-be rock star or a homosexual. He also has the best hair. But that bowl cut screams a-hole.

I adore Bernadette's clothes, they are really feminine and girly. Also I doubt any type of clothing would hide her fabulous bust!

To you, Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn't it?

reply

Nothing wrong with her fabulous bust. It is one of her strong points. But she wears clothes that make her look short and thick. And her hair is wrong. All that hair in her face makes her head look small (in comparison to her body). And it hides her pretty face.

reply

See I disagree - I think they make her look curvy and feminine, like here

Also her hair is also lovely- very girly and well-styled. She'd look wrong with pulled back hair I think.

But we all feel differently!

reply

I respect your opinion. But she would look curvy no matter what she wore. And I am not a fan of hair in the face. Unless someone has a big face and they are trying to make it look smaller. That is not the case with Bernadette. She has a big body and her face looks small with all that hair.

She has pretty hair and she wears feminine clothes. But she would look better if she wore clothes that elongated her body and she showed more face. But even though she dresses like a nerd, she is still beautiful.

reply

That's intentional for the show right down to the glasses she doesn't need. They are downplaying her looks to make it even slightly realistic that she's with Howard and also not to reveal that she looks better that Kaley/Penny. Here's what she looks like when she's allowed to look good:

And for comparisson:

reply

Thank you seldon.

That is the case with everybody on the show. With the exception of Penny. They would all look better. But they are supposed to be playing unsophisticated nerds.

(In a sense they downplay Penny's intelligence. She is supposed to be an uneducated farm girl.)

Perfect examples. Look how gorgeous Melissa Rauch is!
