Why were they so amused by the retinal scanner?

Yea, it's cool and I totally want one to be able to grant me access to home and/or bedroom, but they acted like it was their first time using one. Sometime between their meeting with the colonel and go to the lab for the first time their unique eyeprints or whatever had to have been recorded, and surely their ability to access something had to have been tested, though perhaps not with something saying "access granted", otherwise it'd be like making a copy of a key without making sure it actually works in the intended lock.

The only difference between men and boys sometimes is how much their toys cost. These guys love toys and this was a cool new toy.

Plus they already had that 3D printer and access to all the high tech lab stuff at Cal Tech. such as that gizmo that they made a panini with and that laser that Leonard zapped an action figure with. the eye scanner is no more cooler than those.

NEW toys are almost always better than OLD toys, no matter what.

It also solidified their street cred that they were now part of a secret government operation. How many spy movies have these guys almost certainly seen?

It probably made them feel like Kirk in Star TrekII requesting info on the Genesis device.
