Maybe baby? Possible SPOILERS SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!

Regarding Bernadette and her pregnancy. SPOILERS SPOILERS!!!! In the synopsis for the next episode it says 'and Kooothrappali learns Bernadette's true feelings about her pregnancy when they clean out the future baby room'. Now that can go both ways but my guess would be that Bernie is not too happy about the baby. She clearly felled hindered by the baby in the last episode and long before that she did not even want a baby. She is not going to have an abortion, that would make the whole biblebelt go *beep* but maybe a miscarriage? Maybe Lorre read all the bad reaction to the upcoming baby and decided to cancel the storyline? Or would that be too much of a sad thing for the sitcom in general and for Howard so shortly after the death of his mother? I cannot see them having Bernie whine and bitch about the baby for the rest of the season/series and after the baby arrived even hating it? I am curious which way they are going to go.

We Don't Take No *beep* From A Machine!!

Doubt it.

No way she would go the abortion route. Good Catholic girl, etc.
Miscarriages are not funny. The last shows that I can remember that had a miscarriage was Downton Abby (a drama) and before that, I would have to goal the way back to Moonlighting. And it did not go over well.

More likely they convince her that she will be a good mother, and that they all will be there for her.

This is a comedy and although they have dealt with some serious issues, like the death of Howard's mother, it was the actually death of the actress that caused them to go down that route. I doubt that they would have gone down that route if they didn't have to. The only other death tht they really dealt with was Prof. Proton. Given Bob Newhart's age, they kind of took care of saying good by to the character but can still bring him back a la Obi-wan.

Well Maude was a Sitcom and The Main Character got a Abortion but no Sitcom since has dared go that route!

But I do agree with you thought. but TBBT would NEVER go that way! They would lose lot of Viewers. CBS wiuld also have a heyday

reply

I agree.

It's the most realistic route for a sitcom, which sadly is what makes it cliché.

But I'm glad that at the very least, they're touching on the fact that Bernadette never wanted kids. It's better than doing a lame character retcon where she's thrilled and we're supposed to magically forget she's always felt that way.

With Bernie, that is not going to happen.

The more I think about it as I prepared to answer your question, I think the writers are just trying to show some normal apprehensions of a mom-to-be whose career is also very important to her. I think once the baby is born and Bernie finds a way to balance motherhood with her career, the end result will be a triumphant working mom who realizes she can have it all if she sets her mind to it. And we know Bernie gets what she wants when she sets her mind to it. 

I also predict that we'll see very little of the baby.

I don't think I've ever looked for frogs under my butt while I was wearing my Snow White gown.

Agree. Adolph and Eva will probably be babysitting a lot.

reply

Yes, I would say they'll go by the usual storyline of "I didn't want children, and I don't really want to be a mother.... But OK I'll have a sudden change of heart and be the perfect little housewife!"

reply

Precisely why I HATE this storyline!

To you, Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn't it?

I am betting on Howard becoming the perfect little househusband. There may be some conflict before he fully embraces that role.Frankly, it would not be very interesting if Bernie became the perfect little housewife.

reply

Oh I hope for the same thing! It could also have the possibility of great comedy!

My scenario is based on Hollywood making every story about babies the same. I really good they don't do it that way!

I doubt that Bernie knows what her true feelings are and won't until she sees how it plays out.

I expect that Bernie is ambivalent and anxious. I regard that as well within the normal range. She did not want children, but she agreed to because Howard wanted them so badly, and he agreed to take care of them.Of course she is not enthusiastic — it's a major change and she doesn't know what will happen — but she knows that her husband wants children. Bernie is very adaptable. She is not someone who just takes a position and sticks to it. She will adjust, but she will certainly want Howard to do his share. As a practical matter, Howard will not have to leave his job to take care of the baby since they can easily afford a nanny. Stewart?

It turns out that it was much ado about nothing. Bernie does not feel excited about having a baby, and she thinks that she should.

reply

If anything, I would think she would do what Howard's father did and leave.

reply

The show had undergone a format change by season 5 where it felt more like "Friends". They can change it again to be like "Maude".

I watched the ep and after talking to Raj's dad she seemed more resigned to it. The baby is not going away. Many women who are pregnant have "what the hell did I do?" flashes where they are uncertain, afraid, or resentful. It usually works its way out. It's not all a bed of baby showers.
