Anyone else getting tired of Bernadette trying to sound badass?

I swear, it seems like all of her humor now revolves around her telling people off while still trying to sound cute in that squeaky voice of hers. It's getting kind of old. It's like the writers did it once and thought it was hilarious so they kept having her act like that. Every time she's on screen I ALWAYS know it's coming and I cringe whenever she does it. Insulting someone while smiling as the laugh track goes off like it's comedy gold, ugh... Anyone else feel the same way?

I don't think of Bernie as gratuitously insulting people the way that Sheldon does. I certainly don't see her as pretending to be anything other than what she is, at least around her friends, which you may be implying.Bernie is short tempered, but she also calms down quickly which is the important thing. She is, after all, dealing with Howard most of the time. But I will look for what you see in the future.

reply

Yeah, good point about her dealing with Howard most of the time. She mostly has that feisty attitude whenever he's around.

Yes. I think they are trying to make her into Howard's mother. What particularly annoyed me was when she was officiating Leonard and Penny's wedding, and Howard made a comment during the ceremony, she snapped at him with "Howard!", like he was a 4 year old child. Now, with her being pregnant, she's even more abusive with her words, but I guess that's supposed to be normal for women in that condition, so I can't say anything.

reply

Yeah I think the Howard's mother comparison is definitely valid. Maybe that's why she started being more and more confrontational as the series went on. I do think it's kind of funny when she sounds like Howard's mom but other scenes, like the one you mentioned at the wedding, just make me roll my eyes more than anything.

Howard's mom did not want him to grow up, and Bernie doesn't want him to grow up. Both Howard's mom and Bernie want to be in control of his life.

Hard to say. Howard did not see any need to grow up while his mother was taking care of him.
and Bernie doesn't want him to grow up.
Oh, she most certainly does. She is frequently exasperated by him. I do not see any indication that Bernie enjoys treating Howard like a child. She does not enjoy dealing with children.
. . . Bernie want to be in control of his life.
No, but someone has to be and Howard sure isn't, particularly now that he's going to be a father.Hate on contrarians. They really don't make any sense.

Can anyone give examples of Bernie trying to control Howard's life except in cases in which she has a very legitimate interest? It is certainly a legitimate interest to not want her husband to die doing something that is optional, but she backs off it when she understands how strongly Howard feels about it.It is certainly a legitimate interest to not want to have her life change completely because her husband wants children, and she agrees to have children if Howard will take care of them. Very reasonable, but it won't come to that because they will get a nanny.Bernadette has a completely legitimate interest in the families finances. It's not that he can't spend money on collectibles, but she wants some control over how much money he is spending because he doesn't seem to have anything like common sense. She certainly wants his spending $2500 on what is a glorified toy to be run by her and justified to her.She is a completely legitimate interest in her home, how it is decorated, and what is there. I believe most wives feel that way very strongly. But she was willing to compromise and redo one room at a time and see how it goes. So, just how is Bernie trying to control Howard's life in a way that would that not be true for just about any wife? Can anyone give examples of Bernie being controlling just to show that she can control Howard? The classic example of a wife trying to control her husband's life is insisting that he leave a job that he really likes and get a better paying job that he probably wouldn't like. There is nothing of that.

Oh, no, not at all. They make her sound like his mother, but she is not anything like his mother and she is not going to treat Howard the way his mother did. I think of Howard's mother as shrieking about who is at the door, or I can't find my girdle, or what you want for breakfast, or do you have friends over, etc. But when they are eating all of the rapidly defrosting food, and Leonard and Sheldon are fighting over Sheldon's tendency to always claim all the credit for things, Bernie orders them into the living room. And she does sound just like Howard's mother, but the circumstances are completely different and her actions are completely different.

But Howard basically is a child. If Howard is going to act like a child, Bernie is going to treat him like a child. I don't see how you can blame Bernie for that.

I love "Tiny-Terror" just because.

On sight, she appears all cutely AND the person least likely to "stab someone's heart out with a rusty blade". I think the contradiction between what you see and what you get IS comedy gold!

I thought it was funny at first but it's getting kind of played out and predictable. But I guess you could say the same thing about a lot of Sheldon's humor too (he's by far my favorite character and I find him hilarious) so to each their own.

The tiny woman with the big, bad attitude and voice was funny the first few times. Beyond that, the character just becomes obnoxious.

Exactly.

So you hate her character's shtick that makes her different from the others. Do you hate Bugs bunny's smug attitude and carrot addiction too?

She's annoying but she has to have SOME personality flaws to be interesting.

Never said I hated it, just that it's getting a tad repetitive. And the fact that it "makes her different from the others" somehow makes it work?
Do you hate Bugs bunny's smug attitude and carrot addiction too?
Um... no? Just because a character has certain traits now means I should hate them just because Bernadette's schtick is getting old and that's the same thing? I mean, suppose Bugs's humor is pretty repetitive too when you think about it but that's not really the best comparison.

I agree, but it's just not that funny anymore. Take Sheldon for example, he obviously has several personality flaws but he stays consistently hilarious cause the writers always seem to find a way to use his traits in new and inventive ways. Every time Bernadette is on screen, there may as well be a timer counting down to when she's gonna say something cruel and insulting while trying to remain cute at the same time.

I don't agree with that, but even to the degree that is true, are you saying that she does that without being provoked?
while trying to remain cute at the same time.
That I really don't get it all. I think she is completely upfront about her attitudes, and I don't think she's trying to remain cute. You seem to be accusing her of a hypocrisy that I have never seen.

reply

Right, my bad.

I don't find her funny any more. That's my problem with her. It's a comedy and not much is funny anymore.
