Spin off series?

Any ideas of a spin off series you could see happening? How about "Sheldon's World"? Lol

reply

I'm pretty sure there won't be one. I suspect a lot of people would tune in to watch "Sheldon's World" though, as he tries to rebuild his previous totally-Sheldon-centric existence with a new roommate after Leonard and Penny moved away and Amy dumped him.

And, of course, it's a requirement of the ancient scripture that somebody mentions "The Continuing Adventures of Captain Sweatpants" at this point ...

reply

After BBT ends, I could see a spin centered on the comic book store, not sure how well it would do, for spin-off to be successful, it needs to create an identity unique from the mother show, think Frasier or Maude.

reply

Maude I've never heard of. Frasier I'll give you as it was one of my favourites of all time. :)

reply

How often while watching Frasier did you think of Cheers?

reply

How often while watching NCIS did you think of JAG? That show must be the most successful spin-off of all times.

reply

You may well be right. Perhaps too closely related a spin-off is less likely to fail; certainly, apart from those episodes featuring a Cheers guest star, they didn't make much of it in Frasier.

Sheldon dumped by Amy and fired from Caltech because his research grants dried up, back in Texas or gone to some new campus, would serve for comedic potential; but still, I'm pretty sure we are speculating fruitlessly.

This sounds way too much like Joey. And we all know how this turned out.

reply

But it also sounds like Frasier, ditto; though frankly I would not be all that hopeful.

reply

Bert would be the lead in any spinoff

reply

I think The Simpsons is the most successful spin-off show of all-time. In case you forgot, it was a spin-off of The Tracey Ullman Show.

reply

The ol' answer a question with a question lame ploy. Since you mention answered the Cheers/Frasier question we can just ignore your question.

I think the first season or so I viewed this through the prism of Cheers. After season 2 or 3 this show created such a unique experience that was all its own and completely separate and different from Cheers that you quickly forgot all about that.

Was ist der Sinn des Lebens?

reply

You're right. The spin off surpassed the original. If Diane Neil hadn't of objected there would have been a CGIS as well.

I remember the 2 part JAG episode where they introduced Gibbs and NCIS, which was re-cut as a single episode in syndication. Thought there was too much back story about the investigators and smelled a spin-off. CBS never answered my e-mail asking but, it did happen.

reply

Or how often while watching Mork and Mindy or Laverne and Shirley did you think of Happy Days? On the other side of the coin, I'm sure anyone who watched Joni Loves Chachi was constantly reminded.

reply

Happy Days actually came from a Love American Style episode.

A rich distant relative leaves Stuart a large sum of money, so he buys a struggling independant comic book publishing company. The show is a workplace comedy.

reply

Some people still wouldn't watch that unless his first new title was "The Adventures of Captain Sweatpants."

reply

I still think a Saturday morning educational cartoon called "Leonard and the Skinny Weirdo" could be fun.

They could also turn some of the in-universe references into real shows

* Fun with Flags as an actual show

* Killer Gorilla - not as a B-movie / SyFy movie, though. Do it as a more "gritty" / darker HBO series

* Oshikuru: Demon Samurai (with Charlie Harper listed as composer, too)

Good luck, Captain. I think you're about to go where everyone has gone before

All I can say is, I see why you are not a Network Television Programmer. Those shows sound absolutely terrible.

And Saturday Morning Cartoons went the way of the do-do bird a long time ago.

I see a lot of Saturday morning education stuff, granted it is around 7am but still it is there.

reply

Scoobie Doo is alive and well.

reply

I would watch a show called "Sheldon Dies" where in every episode Sheldon is killed in a new an interesting way.

reply

They'd have to have occasional cameos from Sean Bean and a live-action version of Kenny from South Park, too 

reply

And Alan Dale. Almost everything he's been in he's died also. Not as well known as Sean Bean, but it would still be hilarious!

reply

But to be fair, it took 13 years for his NCIS character to die.

reply

Lol, I'd watch that.
"OH MY GOD THEY KILLED SHELDON!!"
"YOU.......eh. Thanks!"

"Get out here, son! There's a doin's a transpirin'!!"

reply

*SPOILER* (barely)
Maybe you should hope for Jim Parsons to get a part in Westworld (2016).

I big FART

reply

I don't think any of them are strong enough to carry a series on their own, although Jim Parsons is the most likely to be able to pull it off.

reply

Most spinoffs come from secondary or guest characters, not the leads.

Brian Smith might be good enough to anchor The Adventures of Zack.

Perhaps a series called Dr. Bev starring Christine Baranski.

reply

Bert's School of Rock

reply

Uh oh, now he's in love with YOU, too!

reply

If they could find a kid good enough and writing clever enough a young Sheldon spin-off might work. Who wouldn't want to see him get his hands on some yellow cake Uranium :D

reply

Except as I recall, he only tried to... he didn't succeed.

reply

The odds that Jim Parsons would go on and do ANOTHER show about Sheldon are probably as close to zero as you can get.

reply

Something like, asymptotically approaching zero while never actually getting there?

By the way, I'd like to point out - brag, really - that I typed "asymptotically" myself without any error or auto-correction. 😎

reply

And none of these spin -off ideas would get green lit in the first place. This show works because of the appeal of the full cast and their chemistry together. A show about one of them alone would be a ratings nightmare and CBS execs are wise enough to know that.

Ever hear of shows called Cheers and Frasier?

reply

Which part of "THIS SHOW" didn't you understand?

reply

Cheers was also an ensemble show; not all that fundamentally different.

reply

We're not talking about cheers. We're talking about bbt. This the bbt board. Not the cheers board.

reply

Read the post again and then smack yourself.

reply

A Howard spinoff could work, especially if he divorces Bernadette. He's really versatile with all his impressions and attitude. Could be kind of a new Men Behaving Badly, done right.

reply

Or even have Howard and Bernadette stay together.

Perhaps Howard could be offered a prestigious job at some other NASA facility, perhaps Ames Research Center, that could center the show in the Bay Area.

AS others have pointed out the idea of a show centered on the comic book store could work, one idea would to bring the Zack character back as Stuart's business partner, I could see the interplay between them working well.

reply

"The Wil Wheaton & Stuart Adventures", lol.
