The ending of this film...***SPOILER***

Very good film but the ending was left open to a piss poor conclusion. The way it appeared is that Bobby would go to prison not just for missing his parole but would probably be accused of beating his girlfriend...he was done from the beginning, I really wished better for his character.

now that you mention this, perhaps the movie actually has commentary on the legal system. It shows that he went to jail for an unjust reason to begin with and most likely may end up going to jail for another unjust reason. In addition to this, the "bad guy" was a police officer.

reply

I think the commentary is that if you see someone getting hurt/abused, you should call the police which is what the old guy spying on the family didn't do. Then I guess the ghosts wouldn't be haunting the tenants. Bobby intervened at the end.... which is also what he sort-of did that got him into jail in the first place.

You know you make a very good point. It seems those that don't get involved, get away scott free by the system & those who intervene, are the one's paying for someone else's crime. Bobby is a perfect example: went to prison the 1st time & will more likely go a second time because unlike his neighbors, he actually intervened. That's a very good call!

The problem with that is that Bobby DOES call the police when he hears what's happening next door, and sees the bruises on the daughter...

And the ghosts didn't stop.

So apparently calling the police isn't enough, you have to actually get involved, putting yourself in physical danger, or it doesn't count.

...beating his girlfriend AND killing his employer!
Lots of unsolved ends just hang in the air when the final titles appear.
I wish they wrote it a slightly more interesting and intelligent way, so that the rest of the movie was justified.

reply

I think that perhaps the open ending was in fact intentional.

Its not a given that he would be charged with beating his gfriend if she survived, she knew he didn't do it. Plus, if his boss was found dead in the basement, there was no 'proof' he had anything to do with it, which he didn't. Life in the big city so to speak.

reply

Doesn't matter what the girlfriend says, she is injured so he will be prosecuted. His employer turning up dead in his building after he was fired will probably also get him prosecuted unless he can prove he was out of the building
