Tian Tang Kou Casts

The casts in this movie are some of the most popular young actors and actresses in the current movie industry in Asia - Liu Ye, Daniel Wu, Chang Chen, Shu Qi, Li Xiaolu, and Yang Youning. Amongst them, Liu Ye, Daniel Wu, Shu Qi, Li Xiaolu and Yang Youning are all previous winners of Taiwan's Golden Horse Award.

Some source in China quipped this movie as "pretty-men feast," which earned chuckles from viewers. Also, the actors all played challenging and diverse roles before (like except one actor, the rest of them all have played gay characters before), so the acting can be assured.
Also the female cast is quite eye-candy too. Li and Shu are both great actresses for their age.

What a coincidence that most of the major male cast in this movie have played gay characters before. I think 2 of them even got famous because of the well-received gay movies (Lan Yu and Formula 17) they starred.

Even the 1 actor that has not played a gay character before (assume u meant Chang Chen) has acted in Happy Together.

Btw, Shu Qi played a lesbian in Bishonen.

reply

Yes, you are very right. All the 4 main actors in this movie had acted in gay-themed movies before. Liu Ye in "Lan Yu", Chang Chen in "Chun Guang Zha Xie" ("Happy Together"), Daniel Wu in "Mei Shao Nian Zhi Lian" ("Bishonen") and Yang Youning in "Shi Qi Sui De Tian Kong". Quite a coincidence huh?

Can't comment on Yang Youning, coz I've never seen his performance before. However, Liu Ye, Daniel Wu and Chang Chen are definitely the MOST promising young actors from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan respectively at this current moment. With the 3 of them playing key roles, this movie is going to be very interesting even though it does not have top names like Tony Leung, Chow Yun Fatt etc. Anyway, I feel that it's high time that the Asian movie industry grooms younger actors to take on lead roles in future movies. Although Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Chow Yun Fatt etc are good, it's time they take a back seat to give the younger ones a chance too. If you ask me to bet, I would definitely bet on Liu Ye, Daniel Wu and Chang Chen to be the shinning stars of the Asian movie industry over the next 10 years. :)

Sounds good.

Just because someone has played a homosexual role or so called 'serious' role before, doesn't make them a good actor. Like Edison Chen in Dog Eats Dog, he thinks he's a great actor now that he's been in a 'serious role' but it doesn't just work that way. It's yoru actual acting abilities, not just the role.
For eg, Daniel Wu is a TERRIBLE actor. So what if he's won an award. I think the Golden Horse Awards isn't very reliable anyway. If someone like him can win, gee anyone can. The other cast members are ok but Daniel Wu I can never get how anyone can call him a great actor.

No one is saying that acting as a homosexual automatically places an actor in the category of a "good actor". It is purely coincidental that all 4 actors in Blood Brothers had cast in gay-themed movies before. You are right, many of the young actors taking on lead roles in today's Hong Kong movies have crap acting skills, and they had been given the opportunities just because of their good looks. Notwithstanding that, there are still a few young actors who can really act. Personally, I find Liu Ye from China and Chang Chen from Taiwan to be quite good. I found Daniel Wu's performance in his recent movie Protege to be okay - may not be fantastic, but definitely not terrible. However, in the case of Daniel Wu, I do admit that one of the main reasons for saying that he's one of the more promising ones in the Asian entertainment industry is attributed to his looks though.

I have seen only one of Daniel Wu's movies, the Banquet. He did fine there, although the screenplay was kinda weird.

Yup, Daniel Wu was not bad in Protege and Banquet. Based on the latest information released by this movie's director and production team at the recent Shanghai Film Festival in Jun 2007, Daniel Wu and Liu Ye are apparently the lead actors in this movie (with special appearance by Chang Chen). The movie would be released in Asia in the first half of August 2007 .
