What was going on with Caroline in the Gondola? Who was in the water and why?

She explained all this earlier it was part of the scene where her late husband got writer's block in his manuscript and never finished it.
But why was Laura linney hitting him hitting him with the oars of the gondola?
or was that someone else she killed? and THAT was why she didn't want his biography published?
