Pictures!?!?

These soldiers didn't get in trouble because of the things they did to prisoners. Its a war. I'm sure way worse things went on across the country.

They got in trouble because they took photos of the things they did. How can two sargeants who are older than the younger soldiers let this happen. People do messed up things in war, that's a given, and to an extent acceptable, but to photograph it.

I think they all focused on the wrong thing. The girl at the end said there was nothing she could have done different. Don't go in the photographs! There was a whole company in that prison. What about all the other soldiers. They obviously weren't involved. There are always a few bad apples in every job/army/organization. Unfortunately for the younger soldiers, they got caught up with the wrong crowd. They learned that lesson the hard way.

They got in trouble because there were photos that implicated them in crimes - all of which demanded a fair investigation and not a whitewash, like we were given. Only the soldiers that were in the photos were prosecuted. but you could also say that even though they were implicated in the photos and everyone, including the officers, may have had copies of it, they were only prosecuted because the truth was aired in the media.

Once it got out, the bush administration needed scapegoats, so instructed the investigators not to investigate the leaders, so their no-policy for detainees could escape scrutiny.

Once the photos got out, the commander's amnesty and instructions to erase all evidence anyone else had may have effectively covered up worse things done there.

You know, the attempts to excuse the US army for their inhuman conduct with statements like "people do messed up things in war" doesn´t really wash for the simple reason Americans themselves started this war & invaded Iraq out of mere greed. They made it happen. And it`s not a matter of "few bad apples", either - as implied in SOP, the abuse is quite institutional and approved by the folk that run things.
