I missed a part, could you fill me in? Also, how is it even legal...?

I missed a part near the beginning. I understood while watching later, that he went into a house to do his cleaning job (Eva Mendes'), but he didn't know who had hired him? How exactly didn't he know? HOw was he going to get paid- someone left a wad of cash on his desk and an address of the house?

The other thing I didn't understand is how his job was legal. A murderer could hire him after hiding a body, to erase every clue that might lead to get him arrested...
Or was he hired directly by the police, who autorized him to go clean this places?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can clarify this points!

SPOILER

His receptionist received the call and filled out the standard requisition. On the form it indicated the key would be under the planter to gain entry to the home and the call came in from an apparent police detective.

So far, sounds like a legit sounding call...

Once he arrived at the home, the door had a broken evidence seal tape across it. further lending to the fact it was a legit crime scene.

Once he was inside, he found his standard mess, the aftermath of the death, without the body.
