Similarities with 'The Woman' (2011)

Does anyone notice (m)any similarities with this film? Misogony, rape, animalism, inhuman strength, et al? I actually think that The Woman is probably the better film, although having come second by several years...does Deadgirl earn points for getting there first?

Yes, for sure. "The Woman" was a better film all around. I don't know if "Deadgirl" earns originality points or not. I rated this 5 stars, whereas The Woman I gave like 8 or 9. The 5 stars for this movie mostly goes for that gore scene in the bathroom when Johnny loses his organs and stuff like that. "The Woman" earns a lot more from me because of the ending in particular - the Woman is victorious actually, and it's from this empowered viewpoint the film ends. "Deadgirl" just goes back to where it started, if not worse, because now the "hero" of the film is the perpetrator. There is still a woman trapped in a basement for a teenage boy's entitled amusement. It left me depressed and hopeless, whereas with "The Woman" I felt like cheering for what a bad ass she is. It's totally the difference between freedom and captivity. "Deadgirl" just revels in the status quo patriarchal misogyny - basically stating it's a terminal situation that we're trapped in forever. "The Woman" totally rips that idea apart (literally and figuratively).

Speaking of inhuman strength, am I the only one wondering why deadgirl was strong enough to rip a sealed metal door off its hinges yet unable to break free of her chains and the flimsy twine around her legs?

she was crazy, probably explains why she stayed in the chains and had the strength lol

Yep, they basically blended The Woman with River's Edge.

except that this movie was made 3 years before The Woman... Pretty tough to "blend" a movie that hasn't been made yet...

Unless they copied the book...
