CBC cans drama

‘The Border’ axed; ‘Republic of Doyle’ renewed

We called it several months ago, but CBC has made it official. After three seasons, The Border has been axed by the Canadian broadcaster, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Despite also airing in the U.S. on ION, the series lost viewers this year when CBC shifted it to Thursday nights against stiff competition, in a move many in the industry felt solidified its death. The high production costs were also probably a factor.

Just last month CBC named Tom Hastings as head of drama, but he could not be reached for comment.

Grace Park, who joined the Immigration and Customs Security show this past season, has already signed onto the pilot remake of Hawaii Five-O.

Meanwhile, freshman series Republic of Doyle has already been renewed for a sophomore season thanks to mildly decent ratings, according to the publication.

The series stars Allan Hawco, who also created the series, as Jake Doyle, a detective who runs an agency in Newfoundland with his father, played by Seam McGinley.

The show’s renewal eats up the last available 9 p.m. timeslot on CBC, which is another reason for The Border’s cancellation.

Everything I wind up loving gets canceled. We must need another reality show aimed at the stupid.

The Border
Firefly
The Cleaner
Judge John Deed
Doc Martin

Looks like CBC's role model is FOX, which also has a history of cancelling excellent programming. This one just really tears at me. Not being Canadian, I've had to find "alternate" means of watching this. I'm just starting Season 3 and it is just riveting. There's nothing else like this on TV. And it's being cancelled after they set it up to fail, putting it against Grey's Anatomy & some other American blockbuster. Thanks for nothing CBC.

The show obviously ran out of story lines...

The third season was so outlandish and ridiculous... Basically just became a lame "24"...

Well that sucks, it was one of the few actual CBC shows that was worth watching. Sucks even more that it ended on a cliffhanger.

Didn't they also cancel Twitch City after only a handful of episodes? They also did the same to that knock-off of Reality Bites from about 15 years ago, Liberty Street I think it was called? All I remember is it had Joey from Degrassi and the original co-host from Ed's Night Party in it.

I loved Twitch City. It was only intended to be 6 episodes long. The second 6 episode season was a bonus.

I had an opportunity to tell Don McKellar how much I enjoyed the show, in the Second Cup on College, just north of the Kensington Market area where the show was filmed. He seemed quite shy, and genuinely flattered.

Please Bring the series back. It is one of the better series to come out of Canada.

I wonder why they cancelled it, being so popular.

I bought all three series on DVD and binged on this show. The third series ends with a major cliffhanger, which obviously won't be resolved. At least when the American networks decide to cancel a show they don't leave the audience for the show hanging. Boo CBC.

It's still shown in reruns on Saturday night on Channel 20 in Detroit---I liked it too.
