Can anybody explain the storyline?

from the trailer its said it was a love story that couldnt be , or something along those lines. but i never understand . did jimmy love fisher? cause from what it looked like was that fisher wanted and loved jimmy but he didnt feel the same way ? since he turned down ALL her advances, but he up and slept with vinny. he was well aware that she wanted him and even told his father that it would result in marriage and they would be well taken care of. so did he ever have feelings for her and it wasnt really clear of the ended up together , the last scenc there in the lake and she puts it all out for him , and he still refuses but then hold her arm , it end with them standing there. ...so

Fisher understands that Jimmy did love and desire Vinny. She's disappointed that Jimmy is not in love with her, but tells Jimmy "You can get used to me". So Jimmy, for financial, social and other reasons, will stay with Fisher, although he really wants another. There are always homosexual undertones in William's writings -- in this one, I believe that Jimmy represents the homosexual young man who will have to maintain a heterosexual relationship, in order for him and his family to survive. Fisher knows this. And probably also knows that Jimmy will be seeing his 'other love' on the side.

ok thats not a love story thats just a depressing messed up story , im not sure about the whole homosexual thing since they only showed it breifly. it was just jimmy in the bathroom peeing when the gay guy was hitting on him and he knocked him out. i think it had been mention a couple of times how handsome jimmy was and how dirt poor he was, if had money he would be gladly taken into the group but it seemed that everyone in the upper class thought they could use him and buy him because of his situation . i think the reason he was hit on was because of his looks and not because he was gay , that guy was pretty much trying to buy him. there was more going on with vinny and from the looks of it he would of chosen her if the situation was different.

Part of the reason Jimmy is so upset after he finds out that Vinny has the diamond is because he realizes that he isn't the same as common Vinny since she was willing to steal and called him "boy" - at that point he realizes that he may be poor but he has better breeding than Vinny - he chooses not to run off with her or to stay with her when Fisher offers. He begins to show his allegience to Fisher because he refuses to leave the party and insists that Fisher stay with him because he knows the diamond is there. He also doesn't think he deserves Fisher and clearly says "you deserve better." He begins to consider the future with her when she says she will do whatever it takes to change what her father did. Thats her commitment to be brave and stay even tho she is out of her element but he still doesn't feel like he's worthy until she cries and walks away. Vinny said people like her can't cry but Fisher is actually the one that cries more than Vinny.

Thanks for this. I was pretty depressed after watching it for the first time last night thinking that Vinnie and Jimmy really loved each other and both were 'settling' to get the material goods both of them - very poor - needed, Vinnie with the banker and Jimmy with Fisher and all were going to be miserable, having affairs on the sides, taking up drinking, Jimmy ultimately becoming what is his father was - a drunk with a wife in the insane asylum.

I forgot until you mentioned the above.

Vinnie truly is 'common'. Jimmy IS the grandson of the governor of the state and DID have a college education - or at least was accepted or something like that. He does have a leg up on Vinnie, both ethically and social class wise.

I don't think Fisher was mentally off-balance, I think she was just a seriously round peg - European in attitude and standards - trying to squeeze into the square hole of stiflingly crushing southern US society.

That Jimmy will help her adjust because he isn't from that section of society either gives me a more optimistic view of their future together.

Neither is expecting much from their union, but I believe they will get much more than they could have ever dreamed.

That summed it up perfectly. Jimmy never said he loved Vinnie, she said it to him, he just desired her at first until he realized that she was not like him at all. He loved Fisher, remember when they went to the first party together and she had the band play her song? He watched her with a huge smile on his face, he was falling for her then. He just was unsure whether she loved him or was using him as a paid escort and felt that if he compromised his values he wouldn't be the same person.

In the end, Fisher shows that she is human with real feelings, just as he wanted her to be all along because he was in love with her. He just didn't feel worthy of her and was mad at her during the party for what he mistook her as accusing him of stealing, he was insecure about her. When she went to walk away, he realized that he wouldn't have to get used to her, he was used to her and was falling in love with her, therefore he didn't have to compromise is values and look like a man whore.
