Chris Evans as a hunky country boy?

OMG what could be hotter than that?! ^_^

Isn't it frustrating how sometimes you think the signature is part of the reply?

Nothing, that's what! -is fully prepared to suffer through it even if it's boring, just to look at him-

Miss Addie: No go quick, with God.
Fisher Willow: With Jimmy Dobyne.
Miss Addie: Well isn't he?
Fisher Willow: Yes. The same. To me.

I thought Chris Evans did a good acting job, actually. Very different from his other films.

reply

Yes! He definitely watched Brando preparing for this is my guess!

reply

More Paul Newmanesque, actually...as in SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH. Evans shows some acting chops he's rarely been allowed to give. Tennessee would have been happy with his portrayal.

reply

standing woodenly with an acceptable southern accent isn't really acting.

and it's shameful to compare him to paul newman or brando.

that being said...evans is pretty good to look at and wasn't that bad. his character, arguably, is not as fleshed out as other williams' characters.

reply

I extremely dislike it when people say "This and That should never be compared."

NEWSFLASH: Anything can be compared. I haven't seen the film yet, but am a huge Tennessee Williams fan and so I definitely will, and based on the trailer it seems fair to compare him to either Brando or Newman. In my opinion, Newman is the more talented actor, with Brando's range being flat-out incapable of pulling off something as incredible as "Cool Hand Luke," but that's a subject for a different discussion.

Overall, I am prepared for the beautiful cinematography the trailer shows, Bryce Dallas Howard as the second coming of Elizabeth Taylor, and characters that aren't completely fleshed out because the director wanted total commitment to Williams's original script, not wanting to change anything that he wouldn't have changed and therefore not changing anything. I'm sure this film will be a treasure in the Williams canon--I still can hardly believe I'm going to get to see a brand new Williams piece even though he died before I was born!--even if it lacks the intensity and fully-formed nature of his now classic works, and I KNOW that Howard, Evans and the whole cast and crew did their absolute finest preparation to complete this "lost" screenplay in a fashion that would make Williams proud.

reply

I thought he was just okay. Nothing bad, but nothing special either.

reply

i didn't say never. comparisons are allowed. i make comparisons all the time. in fact, i think comparisons are great. what I extremely dislike is when people say 'newsflash.' it has always struck me as supremely immature and entirely too defensive for something like an imdb message board.

i'm just saying that this particular comparison is shameful. and it isn't fair to chris evans. evans doesn't hold a candle to newman or brando, despite being appealing in his own right.

and i'm not really sure i've ever met anyone who thought newman was a better actor. newman was limited in range, but made up for it in charisma. don't get me wrong, i love paul newman more than i've ever liked marlon brando. but watching their performances, it's pretty clear that newman's star power far exceeded his acting talent. marlon brando was a great, tremendous actor. and i would venture to say that you have not seen enough brando films if you think his range rendered him incapable of pulling off 'cool hand luke.'

Chris Evans in Teardrop...no one can beat a good lookin man in a tux.

Chris is seriously hot in this.

I like how his character is so conflicted.

He's torn between what he is now - a poor person, lowest rung of society - and his aspirations to be more than high society, to take care of his parents and honor his reputation as the governor's grandson.

He likes Vinnie, her simplicity, the poor status they share. But he dislikes her dishonesty, and even when she brings the diamond back, and he compliments her on doing it, her response turns him off.

"What choice did I have?"

Meaning if he hadn't announced the diamond had been found, she wouldn't have turned it in.

He knows Fisher is best for him

Great scene where Jimmy is waiting for Fisher with his dad on the porch and he brings up the fact that his rich patroness wants to be with him sexually.

It's awkward for both. The son is telling the father that he is going to pimp himself out and go all the way for marriage and the father, obviously uncomfortable with the idea, can't offer him any better options.

It's a moral morass for both.

Jimmy does make the material choice, but I think both he and Fisher. both painfully honest and honorable, will be pleasantly surprised with each other.

I don't know if I'll make it, but watch how good I'll fake it

I worked with Chris Evans back in the early to mid 90's. He did some stage work for me; livetheatre. His ability to act, even then, was parallelled by no one. You will note in this film (as was the case in London) that Mr. Evans has acting skills far beyond what has made him a multi millionaire. He is a gifted, gifted actor. Just look at the scene with his mother in the assylum and then watch him standing in the rain afterward. Chris is intelligent with good instincts. I'm delighted that his body got you to the box officve and that you're all prepared to "sit thrpough" this film just to watch him, but do me a favor: REALLY watch him because he does Tennesee Williams justice and this film is an opporrunity of a lifetime for any actor. To stumble upon an unpublished and unproduced screenplay by Williams is akin to someone in England finding an unproduced Shakespeare play in a trunk out in the carraige house.

Pay attention. Your "hunk" is going places, is a stronger actyor than Tom Cruise; can clearly do the accents and character roles like Meryl Streep and I'm telling you, there are not many male actors in his generation who can do that.

I just watched it because someone on another thread brought it up. And Evans did a good job. He did remind me somewhat of Paul Newman and how he was in these types of roles, which was a good comparison as Newman could really nail down Tennessee Williams roles. I think Evans has really come into his own lately.
