Jodie Markell's comments

somewhere in the special features Jodie Markell comments that sometimes Jimmy loves Fisher, sometimes he doesn't. She (Jodie) clearly sees it as a love story and gives the impression that it is actually kind of a happy love story--which is not at all the way I saw it. Something was off either in her directing, or in Chris Evan's performance.

Just wondering what anybody thinks, on the off chance that stray people will sometimes wander onto this board and want to talk about it.

You know I was wondering the same thing. It seems too me like he just put up with her, or maybe she wasn't his type of girl. Imagine how ugly he made her feel at that party running around with Julie.

I always had a tough time understanding Jimmy's feelings in the whole thing. I love hearing that Markell sees it as a love story, but i felt maybe more should have been clear from Jimmy's point of view. I never felt that he had an aversion toward Fisher. To me, their biggest problem was miscommunication and pride. The scene, in which they speak of swallowing their pride, couldn't speak louder. And i believe Evan's plays it wonderfully. It's his 'pride' that keeps him from accepting Fisher's advances. It's his 'pride' that keeps him quiet. It's his 'pride' that has him believeing Fisher deserves better. I believe, or maybe it's wishful thinking, that Jimmy's actions with Vinny that night was out of anger and hurt...and 'pride'. He believes that Fisher has accused him of stealing an earring (miscommunication) and when she admits she didn't find her earring..she compares his drinking to his drunk father. Seriously..i need cliff notes on Jimmy's character. Every time I watch the movie, my opinion changes.

Like his mother,Fisher spent time in a mental hospital in Europe.

I wonder if part of his distance from her is that she reminds him of his still institutionalized mother?

I wonder if his mother had been a lot like Fisher before she completely descended into madness?

When Fisher was dancing at the first event they attended together he seemed to take great delight in watching her.

I like many others wish that there was a bit more meat to this movie. A little more background info on certain characters. A little more alone time between the two lead characters. But I actually came away thinking they are an excellent well-suited match and have a chance to have a very successful marriage.
