Jack White's vocals were horrible!!

He made my dog cry. Why was he there????

reply

Who knows. Jack White never was and I don't think will ever be even a decent singer.

From now on, please try to not split infinitives

reply

I noticed that too, though into the song he synced a LOT better with Mick than the beginning. I was horribly unimpressed in the beginning but on into the song it seemed to get better. I agree his vocals were definitely leaving something to be desired...

I found no chemestry between Jack and Mick. Unlike The Last Waltz where it seemed like the guests were showing up to play with some old friends. Jack looked so star struck with an "icon". Now Buddy Guy on the other hand, that was awsome. I love how in awe they were of Buddy. Christina, my only gripe was that she did not sing the melody of the Live With Me, and she seemed too slick. But other than that it shows that with a good band and none of that pre programmed garbage she could be great. She just needs to control her vocals.

i dont mean this to be some kind of insult but i have to disagree with everything you said. Firstly because you mentioned jack looks star struck to be with an "icon" as if it's a bad thing, but then say the stones were the same to Buddy, so whats that about? Secondly, i dont think there was anything wrong with jack being star struck cos who wouldnt be?

BVut i dunno i guess im just defensive because for whatever reason i love jack#'s vocals on this song. I know he's not a very good singer technically, on this at least, but i just really like the sound of it (and keep going to watch it on youtube).

If anyone knows the song Slow Train by Shooter Jennings, it really reminds me of Loving Cup (as sung by Jack)

reply

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought this. I was surprised when I heard how awful he sounded on this song...it reminded me of something you might hear at a bad American Idol or X Factor audition. Christina sounded great though

reply

He was chewing gum as well. I have never seen a musician chew gum while singing. It was so disrespectful & didn't help his frightened child vocals. He was singing with Mick Jagger in a Scorsese film for crying out loud. What a d*ck

reply

Chewing gum helps keep his mouth from going dry. Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters does it as well. I'm sure many others do too.

666 speaks the truth. I had no idea. Thank you for explaining.

reply

John Lennon chewed gum as well.

But yeah, Jack White's performance was disappointing. I'd still take him over the Stones any day, though.

I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar.

reply

This is kind of irrelevant, but John Lennon was known to chew gum and sing at the same time fairly frequently.

Now that I think of it, Lennon chewed gum while recording "All You Need is Love", which featured vocals by Mick Jagger. So there you go.

White is just an untalented w**ker!!

there's a vast network - an ocean of possibilities *

I disagree. It was Jack White's performance in Shine a Light that made me a Jack White fan. I will admit, though, now that I've heard much more of his stuff with The Raconteurs and The White Stripes, his vocals in Shine a Light are far from being his best. But for someone who had never really heard him much before seeing Shine a Light, I thought his voice was pretty darn good.

Jack White, a modern guitar virtuoso btw, was singing in the style of the original song... a sort of southern wail... the very kind of thing the stones have always been so great at: Mimicking/reinterpreting American folk/country and blues. If you didn't get what was going on there between Mick and Jack than you just don't know much about the music I guess.

The big smile on White's usually dour face says it all... he was having the time of his life, playing with his obvious heroes.

Jack White is usually excellent, I think this just wasn't his type of song. I also think he was trying to imitate Mick Jagger too much. Ever try to imitate Mick's singing voice? It's impossible, he has such a unique voice.

Jack's vocals weren't too good, but I enjoyed the song overall. Mick sounded great and the guitars sounded good.
