though this may not be the place for such a trite question - Why is Nanking now Nanjing? - I go there often for a little r+r - just watching this film now, though i know of the story from my visits, and the utter contept my Chinese friends have for the Japanese

The same as from Peking to Beijing, just a change of romanization system. Before the 1950's, proper names in Chinese were translated into English according to the Wade-Giles system, which Hong Kong and Taiwan still use, in a slight difference though. After the new Standard Mandarin romanization system called Pinyin had been adopted in the 1950's, the Mainland began to restandardize the Latin spellings of proper names, but this doesn't bring any change to the writing of the original Chinese characters. For instance, the common family name Chen in the Mainland is equal to Chan in HK and Taiwan. It's worth noting that Singapore uses the same spelling system as the Mainland does and also simplified the characters. However, some, though very few, proper names keep the old Latin spelling due to their historical significance thus to avoid ambiguity. E.g., Peking University.
The massacre was in 1937-1938, when Nanjing was still spelt Nanking in Latin language.
