Why?

One of the questions that wasn't raised in this movie is why the Japanese soldiers sunk to such obscene levels of depravity. Can anyone offer a resonably thoughtful and intelligent answer to this question? The only things that would make sense to me is if the Jap culture at that time was inherently barbaric and pitiless or if their soldier were extremely brutalized during the course of the war and lashed out the way the Russians did. Does anyone have an idea?

I'm beginning to research this subject myself. It's a interesting humanistic topic for consideration.

Some of the research I've come across suggested that mentally, the Japanese soldiers were worn down first, then they were built up again with emphasis on the dehumanizing of their victims.

Ultimately, this is the story behind every battle, every war, every mass murder, every genocide.

That's pretty small minded thinking.

It's obviously not specific to Japan (Americans at My Lai massacre etc).

There has been analysis that individuals and societies that value obedience to authority over other qualities may be most vulnerable to such conduct.

It's interesting to see that 20th century was the bloodiest one hundred years of all time. Hitler created the efficient mass murder of ethnic cleansing in Auschwitz , Stalin persecuted ethnic minorities in work camp in Siberia, Japan alienated Chinese as animals in order to call themselves "Superior Rulers" because they don't worth to own the land they have.

Remember when we all celebrated the fall of Berlin wall 50 years after? When we were commemorating the end of the century? Hoping for a an new era with peace between ethnic minorities? It didn't take long until Radovan Karadzic broke that united world with Srebrenica Genocide, killing 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, as well as the ethnic cleansing of 25,000-30,000 refugees in the area of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Not to mention uncountable rapes of Bosniak women, simply because Karadzic used nationalism to alienate ethnic minorities that were different to himself. It turned out he only used that to cement his power (It took American firepower to end the bloodshed).

Ethnic conflicts began when human cultures' diversified, today European has a reluctance to easily accept migrants (Especially North African Muslim in Spain). Migrants can only live in Ghettos because they are alienated by the majority citizens. I recommend Prof. Niall Ferguson's book 'The War of the World' which depicts "Alienation" is the main course of our greatest bloodbath.

Feel free to mention the mischief created by the croats too, Tudjman anc Co. were exactly as brutal, but history tend to only blame the serbs as vicious nationalists.
