Was it stated Susan was an expert skater anywhere?

'Ginormica' escapes the giant robot using abandoned cars as skates,
then 'Susan' escapes Galaxharr's ship through the robot bay on skate-like
floaters that fell off a hover-scooter.

Maybe it was edited out or it cost too much to show but...

The photos in her house could have shown her skating.
She could have had skating trophies in her bedroom.

Did I completely miss the clue that she had skating experience?

Is it really that hard to believe that she already knew something about rollerskating without having to spoonfeed it to us? It's like saying we need to know beforehand if somebody can ride a bike. ;)

But expert? The way she looked so uncomfortable the whole time, I wouldn't say that.

The OP is talking about foreshadowing. A number of films do it so that when you see the character use that item/technique later on, it doesn't look like an 11th hour plot wedge.

Examples:

In 'Ratatouille,' we see Linguini and Colette rollerskating in Paris. Later, when Linguini acts as the server for the restaurant, and does so on roller skates, we can believe it.

In 'Back to the Future,' we establish that Marty plays guitar and knows Rock and Roll. This allows his 'Johnny B Goode' performance to not take the audience completely by surprise.

In 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park,' Ian's daughter says she was cut from the gymnastics team. Later on in the film, she uses these skills to take down a raptor.

"HAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMM!!!!"

reply

It's not at all required. In fact, her skating was the foreshadowing, anyway. Remember those hover skates she used to reach Gallaxhar in order to rescue the others?

I mean, obviously not every film can do it like Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, anyway. ;)

I got the impression that they were trying to depict Susan as a sterotypical Californian Valley Girl, so the skate chase didn't bug me that much in the movie.

reply

She didn't skate like an expert. She flailed like someone who'd screwed around on roller skates as a kid, and not at high speed or on uneven surfaces.

An expert can skate forwards or backwards, go on one leg for long stretches, cross-step to go around corners, etc.

Agree, she did not looked like an expert.

In fact when Susan skates on the cars and starts to gain speed she looks quire afraid of skating.

reply

she looked like she was trying her best not to fall over and hurt herself, even if she wouldn't of hurt herself the instinct is still there

"sir, sir, i gotta check and see if you've soiled yourself, I'll get to you in a moment, sir!"

reply

She was using cars as roller skates. Even expert skater would be having trouble doing that. Just because the thing rolls doesn't make it a roller skate.

reply

Actually, if we accept Susan BEING almost 50 feet tall, she'd weigh around 30 tons.

Those cars wouldn't have hold her weight up for one second.

So, who cares if she was an expert skater, if she would use "skate" that weren't made for her weight.

They could've given her a truck to skateboard on.

Based on just her height? Usually weight is more dependant on mass.

Are we really getting into a physics discussion over a cartoon movie with a 50 foot woman, talking cockroach and a godzilla sized bug that fights aliens in 3D?

Sure...

...what's your point?

reply

The point is, you're looking way too far into a kid's movie. It's an animated movie about a woman who grows 50 feet tall because of a meteor, and then teams up with a blob, a scientist turned into a cockroach, and the missing link. If they want the giant woman to skate on cars, let her skate on cars and enjoy the humor in it.

Not everything needs to be so over analyzed.

I thought the same thing as the OP when I saw the movie.

Since there were 2 seperate skating sequences it seemed like Susan was naturally drawn to skating. So it seemed that earlier in the movie they should've showed her skating as a hobby to put these 2 instances into the context that "yes, Susan skates so we understand why it's her first inclination to skate during the film, and she's got the skill to pull it off."

On the physics thing: I kept thinking that both cars she used would have to be in "Neutral" for them to roll(the odds of two cars picked at random both left in neutral are astronomical), otherwise Susan would've had to try to shift the gear shifts on each one with her giant fingers. If she tried skating with them and they were in "Park" or in gear, she would've fallen over as the wheels would be locked, or else the transmissions would've been destroyed - either way they wouldn't roll very well unless they were in neutral.

reply

I personally thought Susan was somewhat experienced in skating but she's certainly no expert.

i thought it was a little farfetched that someone could use cars as skates on their first try, but honestly, when ur a giant 50 foot person standing on cars that would shatter if they made a jump carrying only its own weight, then believing she can use the cars as skates is not that stupid.

she was basically running for her life too. I'm not sure how many of you have been in that situation, but you'd be surprised how quickly you can be competent at something when ud die otherwhise.

its a kids movie, she wasnt some amazing unstoppable force with the car skates, it was just a way to get some speed.

i bet if they took the car skating out, and had susan running too slow and constantly caught up to by the robot, then you'd have all these people saying "why didnt she just stand on some cars to go faster??"

reply

Actually, it's hinted in the part where the viewers realize they are watching a children's movie. ;D

reply

I for one was just as offended when they didn't explain beforehand that Dr. Cockroach's PhD was in dance. It completely ruined the movie for me.

reply

I was confused that the movie didn't explain where B.O.B. got his eyeball and the fact that General W.R. Monger was well past mandatory retirement age.

Come on, people. It's a movie aimed at children who wouldn't notice these things unless they were pointed out to them. Probably not even then.

Just watch and enjoy. Your're supposed to suspend disbelief for almost any movie any way.

reply

Maybe she's Canadian. They are born with skates on.

reply

She has amazing legs. Maybe she skated to exercise?

If the giant lady wants to get to Modesto from San Fancisco... why is she on the Golden Gate Bridge? That's the wrong way!
