.. You shouldn't kill the dragons, you should be nice to them (unless they're bigger than all the other dragons). Why couldn't they try being nice to the big one too??

Because the big one WAS trying to kill them, and forced the other dragons into killing vikings, thus the other dragons' killings are justified.

I thought the same thing. To play devil's advocate, I'd have to guess that on one hand there wasn't time to gain the trust of the biggest dragon, he was on the attack and could have taken everyone out if they didn't go on the defense pretty quickly. And on the other hand, no one had time to connect with the bigger dragon and gain his trust. Plus he seemed to be sitting around wanting to do nothing but be waited on hand and foot while all the other dragons worked for him. No one got to see any redeeming qualities from that dragon. That said, Hiccup did want to work something out, but because of the knee-jerk reaction of his father and his community, he did not have time to act out of clear thinking rather than hatred and confusion.
