Sequel Will Feature an Openly Gay Character

I don't care one way or the other if people are gay, but pushing your ideological agenda is a huge turnoff for me.

I loved the original, but it sounds like the sequel will just be a platform to push an agenda.

Absolutely not true. It's just a single line of dialogue that will go over children's heads. And that character's sexuality was always ambiguous, so it's not even surprising.

Simply recognizing that gay people exist doesn't imply an agenda. The original movie made it clear that sexuality would be addressed when they showed Hiccup's attraction to Astrid.

There are about a dozen main and supporting characters in the film, so I don't see anything unrealistic about having one who just happens to be gay.

I'm not afraid of homosexuals... I work with them every day.

If someone doesn't embrace your world view, are they necessarily bad? Can someone disagree with you and still have a legitimate viewpoint?

Aren't you pushing your ideological agenda?

It's very brief and a kid would not likely catch it. I don't think many adults even caught it. Though I do completely support children learning to accept the LGBTQ community from a young age, so it's great if they do catch it. I don't think it feels forced in at all either. Dean DeBlois is gay and one character being gay and saying one simple line felt natural.

I certainly didn't catch it, his sexuality was barely even suggested. Hardly a gay agenda OP lol.

reply

Pushing an agenda? HAHAHAHA then Hiccup kissing Astrid is so awful god I'm sick of this heterosexual agenda can't they just keep it to themselves???!?!?! Those perverts.

Look, I understand you aren't a homophobe. But it's about goddamn time there is representation in the LGBT community in animated films. Look around, people are gay. Everywhere. Kids know, and they don't care because they aren't taught that it's wrong until someone *beep* tells them it is. My two best friends are a gay man and a gay woman, they have said as millions of people have said; they knew they were gay from early on but were too scared to face it because it was "wrong". Imagine a kid knowing they are gay seeing this movie and seeing Gobber, a good, funny, well-liked and important character, is gay and isn't treated any differently by his friends/tribe. This is monumental. I don't think you understand.

It's a small line that will most likely go over people's heads and the negative reaction to it has been out of control. And it isn't fair. If Hiccup and Astrid had a long steamy sex scene, parents would probably be like ??, but if Gobber modestly, ever so slightly mentions that he's gay, they say OH MY GOD HOW DARE YOU FORCE SEXUALITY ON OUR KIDS GOD YOU ARE DISGUSTING

reply

And it's not even like you can attribute representation of the LGBT community to the modern PC era or accuse modern movies of pandering to more contemporary sensibilities.

Gays have been around for a long darn time and have been drastically more well accepted in various times and places throughout history. (and before whoever is guarenteed to respond to this says it, yes, I know that homosexuals have also be way more persecuted at various times and places throughout history)

It is a hot topic right now, so I can see why people tire of it or see it as an agenda, and I'm honestly tired of the debate because it's a foolish waste of time arguing what people are allowed to do with their junk..
But this is definitely not a new concept.

"Ah. Multiple exclamation points, the true sign of a deranged mind."

reply

There is no gay agenda being pushed, it just seems homophobes just like to go up on arms about anything gay.

reply

Gobber saying "This is why I never got married" is hardly a homosexual comment, imo. Personally, I find it laughable that the studio is calling this maneuver a win for homosexual equality in media; it can be interpreted in so many different ways.

Always the same.

"I'm not against gay people, but [some homophobic BS]"

"I'm not a racist, but [some racist BS]"

"I'm not against Jews, but [some antisemitic BS]"

So predictable.

yeah...you are all a bunch of tumblr retards. There's nothing wrong with being gay, or saying gay lines, or even pushing an agenda. Hell, you could argue both HTTYD movies are about pushing a gay agenda if you think about it. The whole focus is about tolerance and peace against a group of misunderstood creatures.

The problem with the whole thing in the second movie is the blatant and pointless execution. Just like everything else in that movie, it's just not done well.
