3d glasses

just wondering...when the movie opens in wide release will theaters be providing 3d glasses for the movie? u dont have to bring your own or anything right

reply

yeah they give you the glasses, and I'm pretty sure you get to keep them (I know my theatre did that with Beowulf 3D). They're not the cheesy red/blue glasses either...they look like over sized sunglasses.

To my knowledge most theaters are equipped with Digital Dolby 3d Projectors. Dolby themselves provide the glasses to the theater staff but they do have to be returned as they are re-useable and cost about $50.00 a pair.

hmm..you may be right robert. I think remember hearing something about the glasses being pretty expensive. The glasses we kept from Beowulf were kind of cheap, Real D glasses (still black and kind of sunglasses-like though). the ticket to see 3D movies are more expensive too.

There are 3 different types of 3D glasses that I know of currently being used.

The first ones are Dolby 3D glasses which cost the theather $50 each. The lense is made a glass and they are large enough for you to wear your own perscription glasses underneath. They have to be returned at the end of the movie.

The second are RealD glasses, these are use once glasses which basically means you can take them home with you. I'm not sure how many theathers use these cause the cinema screen has to be painted silver for them to work properly.

The third are electornic 3D glasses which apparently have to be switched on via a button on the arm of the glasses. They cost the theather $70 each but produce the best 3D effect over all other glasses. I have yet to use these

I work at a theatre too (I noticed you mention you did on another post) I've only used the RealD, and haven't even heard about the last one. Is the quality between the Dolby and ReadD glasses very different?

reply

Movie theater supplies everyone with glasses, not cardboard, but a decent plastic frame. Very reusable if you see it again. I know I am going back.
