Amanda Seyfried

Nothing against this young actress, but this just was not her role. The lines fell flat and I could buy into her portrayal of sophisticated yet youthful. I would have preferred to see Amy Adams in this flick. Any other preferences for Sophie?

I agree, I think a better young actress for this role would have been Gabourey Sidibe

reply

Wait, really? Gabourney??

Heidi Montag would have been perfect.

I had no idea this was a monster movie!

Amy Adams... Seriously? After the snooze-fest that was Leap Year, you would really want to see that? Yuck. I would have cast Zooey Deschanel. And someone less blond than the guy that played Charlie.

reply

I agree she didn't do a good job, but I don't think it was her fault--the dialog given to her was bland and stupid. I enjoyed her when she was a fact checker going after her story and when she was interacting with the Secretaries of Juliet--it was when she had to fall in love (and I do mean "had to") with the blond guy that she (and he) got boring.

I don't think even the effervescent Amy could have saved that role--it needed a rework.

reply

She had two expressions: pouty and mooning about "true love". I don't think she can carry a movie. I enjoy her in Big Love but perhaps she felt the weight of the production on her shoulders? Not many can compare w/Redgrave but she should have helped improve her performance, instead it was bland beyond Wonder Bread.

Didn't help that the script was absolute piffle.

reply

I don't think the movie was meant to be deep. It's like whipped cream: light and yummy, but it's like eating air. I thought Amanda did excellent during her emotional scenes. She can seriously cry when she wants to, haha. And I liked the guy who played Charlie.

reply

Yes, the dialogue was very sparse and basic. The movie was much more enjoyable in the beginning when she was a struggling fact checker. I think that Amanda CAN carry movies, maybe not box office hits... but this movie at least the last quarter of it was just sad... no one could have pulled it off. It was like trying to be serious and light and stupid at the same time... with the whole balcony thing. And plus Their "love" seemed to forced and ingenuous; and I felt that it was the actor who played Charlie's fault. He has no acting chops. Like in a crappy National Lampoon movie kind of no acting chops.

reply

I thought they were both bad, and they couldn't make me believe in the romance at all until the very end of the movie. I felt like they both finally decided to put in some real acting for one or two scenes.

In fairness, I suppose it would have been difficult for even a seasoned actor to have pulled off those cringe-worthy lines. The script was beyond horrible. Still, I didn't feel that they were really trying.

reply

I think she did a fine job. Amy Adams at 35 is too old for the role and Zooey Deschanel is not mainstream enough, she's just too "quirky" for this movie, although she was great in "500 Days of Summer."

reply

"had to"

LOL!

These two were the text book example of anti-chemistry.

I agree that the script was cringingly bad. Her delivery was awful, though, and that's her fault, not the writer's or the director's. I agree that she's just not good enough yet to carry a film.

I've seen her in a few things now, most notably Mama Mia and Les Miserables. I think with more experience under her belt she'll do fine. I just don't think she was ready for this movie. She's adorable and sings like an angel, so I'll keep watching.

You sound like my GF. She said the same thing about AS.

She was adequate but def. not great. Based on this and other recent casting news, there really seems to be a void for good young actresses in Hollywood.

Oh, there are plenty of good young actresses... just no one smart enough to cast them... I think given the right material, Amanda is great too.

reply

I think we have plenty of good, young actress's in Hollywood, but they might have passed on this film. I think the chance for them to have worked and learned from Vanessa Redgrave would have proved an incentive for actress's such as Scarlett Johannsen, Natalie Portman, or Rachel McAdams to have at least auditioned for the role. They all would have proven to be better suited for the role than Amanda was, in both the acting and looks department. Amanda is just mediorce at best.

reply

How about Kiera Knightley? I think she might have fit the role.

reply

I kept wanting her to be Clare Danes. She wore ridiculous amounts of eye makeup, and her hair was too perfect most of the time.

I thought she portrayed Sophie really well, to be honest.
