What made me mad...

Ramona yelled at Alyson when she discovered she was wearing a fat suit and went into a rant about how she didn't know how terrible it was to be fat. It was as if she thought she was an African who was starving to death. Or a homeless child living on the streets. Those types of people are born into bad situations and have almost no way of getting out of them. But being fat?! You have a choice. You don't HAVE to eat badly and you CAN exercise. I'm not saying that means people can make fun of people just because they're fat. That's wrong. But Ramona needs to either accept that she is overweight or do something about it. Not whine and moan like she had no choice in the matter.

"We've all got both light and dark inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act upon."

reply

Um...some people have no choice in the matter, and some fat people are actually quite healthy, just because our fat does not mean you eat badly or your unhealthy, there could be many reasons why someone is fat. Some can exercise and eat so healthy and never lose the weight so unless you yourself is overweight you dont understand. im happy she yelled at her, I would do the same thing.

reply

But then again, Ramona said it herself, she "hates exercise." So isn't she the real culprit here? She's well aware that she eats when she's depressed and that she hates exercise. Point being, she's AWARE of her habit. So why isn't she doing anything about it? Is it too hard to not eat too much during meal time and/or hold up until meal time before eating? Or how hard is it to jog at least 10 minutes in the morning? She even has a "secret stash" of sweets in her car. The film made it seem like Ramona was the overweight character to sympathize with, but no one can (or should) sympathize with her with that kind of attitude.

I don't get this "secret stash of sweets" in movies. Are there really people who stock up on sweets? I'm not exactly filthy rich, but when I do have money, I never see the point of stocking up on chocolates (nor have I seen anyone I know, male or female, stocking up on sweets). Maybe we buy a bar or two of Snickers, but that's it. And that usually just happens when there's a trip, or we're going to the beach...so that we'll have something to munch on on the way.

reply

There is no way someone Ramona's side could jog ten minutes. She'd have to start with walking and lose quite a bit of weight before she even considered jogging or she'd get seriously injured.

That being said, having struggled with Obesity for many years in the past, everyone is right when they say that you have to come to the realization that the problem is NOT going to just go away. Ramona was a food addict, literally addicted to food, so yes, it really WAS that hard for her to stop eating when full and not eat again until the next meal time. When your a food addict that is all you think about. What you can eat, when you can eat it, what you can't eat, when you can't eat it, etc. So what should have been done is her going to an over eaters anon meeting or speaking with a counselor about it, just like any other addiction. She needs to figure out ways to control the psychological urges that cause her to want to eat, or else counting calories, weightwatchers points, portions, whatever will not last because addictions are strong.

lol .. I just posted basically the same thing before I read your post. 100% agree!

I understand what you're trying to say, but I would like to point out that she said it best - she eats (binges) when she gets depressed. In other words, food is like a drug to her because of her depression. It's not that easy just to "snap out" of a depression. It's not that easy to just "quit" drinking or doing drugs or binge eating once you're realized that (alcohol, drug of choice, food) is what makes you "feel better."

At this point, she is self-medicating herself with food and is probably in need of couseling and/or therapy and a good support group. A support group can help others who share the same problem (in this case binge eating) support each other and more importantly, not judge the person. Once she can find out why she's depressed (maybe because of the ridicule or maybe due to something genetic - major depression which might require anti-depressants), then she can focus on healthier eating habits and gradually exercising more.

Again, this is part of binge eating. That secret stash of sweets is no different than a drug addict's secret stash of pills or an alcoholic's stash of whiskey.

Sorry, but no. It's basic thermodynamics. Someone who eats healthy foods for the most part and exercises regularly would not look like Ramona.

Do you seriously think it's THAT easy for someone her size to just start exercising and going on diets? Welcome to reality, if that were true then there wouldn't be an obesity epidemic in the US since people will be able to change their bad habits so easily. The girl in the movie said herself that she was fat all her life so, people with this problem do have actual problems losing weight and unlike the few that claim they love the rush of a good work-out, most people don't.

reply

no. people are just pathetic, that's it.

God, it's just excuse after excuse after excuse. Nobody expects that obese people will immediately start working out like Schwarzenegger or Stallone's and live from proteine shakes for the rest of their lives. Living healthy is a lifestyle. Like everything else in life, it starts with the little things. Nobody is an amazing athlete, a great model, or employee of the month at work immediately. It takes practice and understanding. How 'bout taking an extra block while walking to school? Eat one chocolate bar at lunch instead of two.

Exercising could be easy (and fun) for everyone, regardless of his/her weight. Saying "why even bother" or making op nonsense excuses like "it's not THAT easy" is like.... giving up on life. Or pure lazyness.

I agree with you.

That made me mad too! Oh yeah, its so hard to be fat, blah blah blah. Its even harder to keep yourself healthy and refrain from eating fat foods. If you are being made fun of for being fat, and you hate being fat, EXERCISE! Really, its not like she had a medical condition or anything. And I am pretty skinny and I get made fun of it just as much. If someone were ugly, something they can't control, and they get made fun of because of it then you can sympathize with them. But you are taught to respect fat people and if you say one bad thing you hate them and you are hated. Its total bull.

Theres a lot of bad things that need to be said to many fat people. Example: "You walked just fine into the store. There's really no need for a handy cap sticker/scooter buggy." That does make me mad. When lazy people do things like that, esspecially because I know a parapaligic [sp?] who will do everyhting within his power not to use his wheel chair in a store. Excersize and diet can help many people [hopefully i am one of them. I am trying to change my life by making gradual changes], but there are many people it can't. More research is being done on obesety. More and More evidance leads to it being a myntal disorder for many. Beeing told their entire lives its just physical and they're just lazy, when they do try to lose weight, they get discuraged when often times nothing happens. Also keep in mind people with thiroid and other medical problems. There needs to be work done to improve the obesity epidemic, but the "fat is evil" attitude dosn't help those who needs the push. if anything it sets them back further.

the whole isn't equil to the sum of its parts.
