In the end of the film Burke attacks Nathan, does this happen in the book. if yes, is it explicit?

It is quite brutal in the book--yes.

There is a lot of debate about just WHAT happens at the end of the novel. I remember when we talked about it in class, the students were pretty divided into two camps about whether Nathan lives or dies. The book seems to have left this more open-ended than the movie does.

I still think Jim Grimsley's masterpiece is "Comfort and Joy", though.
