This movie pissed me off!! (SPOILERS)

Why can't a movie like this end with things working out? Why is there always a suicide or a brutal death? I thought for sure the boys would work through the homophobia and horror of their lives...and actually wind up loving each other in a very positive way.

There does nto have to be a horrendouse ending to teach a lesson.

I don't know what ending you saw. But the one i watched Nathan was alive. Just like in the book.

I think you need to look at it again. Nathan was dead at the end of the movie.....it was his "ghost" or "spirit" that was walking around looking at his own funeral and watching Roy be sad. If you look closely at the end Roy looks into the bus rear view mirror and sees an empty seat, then looks again and sees Nathan.

I don't agree that every movie must have a happy ending. Isn't it enough that 99% of Hollywood movies have one ? If every movie has a happy ending, then there's not much room for surprise, for artistic liscense, or originality in film. There's enough junk movies that have happy endings to allow you to watch 9 of them a day for the rest of your life. How about some original ones?
Incidently, I believe this film DOES have a 'happy' ending.

It is not that I want EVERY movie to have a happy ending...just that almost all GLBT movies do not have one...too many end in such agony.

Occasionally I would liek the happy gay coulpe walk off into the sundset together.

And I just finished reading the bok...and am still not sure if he was dead or alive. LOL LOL LOL

There is too much drama in our gay lives to end so happy.

If you're looking for GLBT movies with happy endings, I've seen a few recently. "Beautiful Thing", "Maurice", and "Latter Days" all have happy endings.

"Maurice" is a beautifully done movie, a true classic drama, that's gorgeous to look at, and the acting is amazing. I'd definitely recommend it, if you haven't seen it yet.

"Beautiful Thing" is a sweet movie that really made me happy. Great Mama Cass Elliott soundtrack, too.

"Latter Days" was good. It had potential, which it didn't quite live up to, but I enjoyed it nonetheless (the fact that one of the lead actors was to-die-for gorgeous didn't have anything to do with it)!

Thank you...I have seen and already own alll three of these movies and I agree they are great!!!

Great examples of happy ending GLBT movies. But have you seen "Shelter", "C.R.A.Z.Y." or "Heights" Those movies ended on high notes as well; loved them. BTW, I LOVE your examples as well.

Agreed! Too casper-ish for me, and like soooooo many other reviewers said, the ending is at odds with the entire movie.... and also, I just don't like it :Phaha
BTW, there's a reason 99% of hollywood movies have happy endings... we simple humans like to feel good :)

Time and place.

This movie takes place in the 70's, not exactly the most enlightened time. Back then most gay stories, real or fictional, were tragedies.

Today, many more gay stories end happily ... if they are set in modern times.

The story as it played out, was consistent with the time in which it was made.
