Save your time and money

I watched the movie on DVD with less than decent quality, so I can't
comment on its camera work. But the movie giveth the feeling of
cheesiness and pretentiousness. Good topic material and actors to make
a good movie, Just lack of fresh and soul. A huge waste of resources.
Why did they even try to make this movie?

This movie cries out to be seen on the big screen. The cinematography is glorious, the score stirring, and the story is quite moving. Try leaving your sad little apartment and get out into the real world before you needlessly and unfairly condemn a movie.

I think it was a bit of a disappointment in the sense that the material was there for a great movie, which COHS is not. Even so, I do think it's worth a trip to the cinema. It is definitely worth it for the cinematagraphy. I'm a sucker for beautiful and/or interesting looking movies. War Kai Wong can get me to watch his movies for that reason alone.

COHS is a serviceable moviegoing experience. Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh are the consummate pros and I'm a JRM fan so I feel my $$ was well spent. JRM's George Hogg is admirable, I think the movie would have been really good if we had gotten a deeper look into the man. Other than a couple of lines about his pacifist background, we really do not feel why a fairly ordinary man did such an extraordinary thing for the 60 orphans. I'm not sure if this shortcoming was the director's fault, JRM's or the script's. Or all three.

Well said, pengel-2, the the movie is beautifully done, and the message it intends to deliver is loud and clear. I came home with tears still coming down my face. The person that criticizes the movie watched it on bootlegged dvd, and he clearly has no taste in anything that's good.

reply

I agree. It was beautifully filmed, acted and written.
It moved me to tears and I found the testimony at the end by the "children", now grown into elderly men so moving.
Lovely film.

reply

Extremely well-said, pengel-2.

I thought this movie was incredible. It was so moving. The story was sad and inspiring. I really loved it.

yea, not well said like the responses read. terribly said. no need to make wild assumptions and insult the OP just because he didn't care for how a story is told.

i disagree with the OP though as far as it being a waste of resources. the story's good enough to at least attempt to make a movie about it. as long as it's not blatantly disingenuous which I don't think it was. enough people will not find it pretentious or cheesy, that kind of assessment can be so very subjective. they'll learn about an important event at least.

i really dont get it, you come to bash a GREAT movie with a really moving story and excellent cinematography after downloading a pirated trash-quality copy off the internet? this is just insane and irresponsible.
and not only that, you also advertised that unprofessional behaviour on IMDB.
you could've kept your monkey-brained opinion for yourself which i highly recommend from now on..

I just saw this in the theatre and was REALLY looking forward to seeing it with the GREAT Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh, but although the scenery and large amount of money spent in making this, the film still falls flat. I am sure many people like Jonathan Rhys Meyers, but this guy CANNOT act to save his life!!!!!!!! Another reviewer thought that Radha Mitchell was wooden, but I didn't mind her performance although her Aussie occasionally slipped in. Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh's performances, while fun to watch, seemed a bit "phoned in", although the supporting cast of children wasn't too bad. The script was very, very weak and there were a couple of times when they had the japanese fighter planes straffing the ground that you could DEFINITELY tell that they were squibs and did NOT come off as genuine bullets hitting the ground (too much spark and flash). Overall, really sad considering the time and effort that went into making this film. I likely WON'T pick this one up on DVD unless it's really cheap.

why do you care, u didn't even want to pay to watch it

A HATEFUL MOVIE with HATEFUL ACTORS. Suckups, stupidity all over.

I thought this was a great movie but really Johnathan and Radha Mitchell could've put a bit more effort in to there performances. I agree that Radha was a bit wooden and didn't really commit fully to this woman.

I generally always love Johnathan but I even thought he was lacking here. Hmmm I dunno.

Great story though. I'm definitely interested in finding out more about this story and the tormoil these people faced that led to these struggles.

I like the story, just not the main 2 actors. The scene where he got Tetanus: "No, it's nothing, just a scratch" was so stupid it doesn't belong to the movie. Why woulden't you let the doctor strealize it? If not with anything else, with pee.
His voice was very anoying, the parts (clearly added, not part of the history) with him and the blonde girl, so "urban" dialog betwen them, felling sory for one another.

Great and touching movie.

I can sort of relate to the OP

While I loved the film, as the story, acting, cinematography and especially soundtrack were marvellous, the directing is lacking. The storytelling felt inconsistent, the pacing was rather rushed, and some thing weren't properly explained. However I think these technical aspects are easy to ignore and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Still I wouldn't go so far as to question the reasons for making it. It's a solid and inspirational film
