I'm From A Town Like This

I came from a small midwestern town somewhat like this of around 600 people. We had our own little dinner that would open and close depending on if anyone was interested enough in it and a gas station where to this day (June 2012) they still pump your gas and wash your windows for you. Our school was elementary at one end and jr high/high school at the other, seperated by the lunch room, gym, and wood shop in between. I think that's a huge part of why I identify with this movie so much because everything was SO true to life. Neighbors checking in on neighbors, shop owners knowing you by name and what your "usual" is, little to no opportunities. It's a small town in undoubtedly a string of small towns that, should something happen to it, no one is going to miss except the people who feel connected to it. I think that's part of the real horror of this movie is that the whole town itself is these peoples' home and they aren't safe anywhere in it. I'm not saying you have to be from a small town to appreciate or even like this movie, but I know it helped me become as invested in it as I did.

Really well put! I'm not from a particularly small town but I thought this film was excellent. The characters felt like real, average people going about their uneventful lives and that made things all the more startling and horrifying when the bursts of realistic, graphic violence occurred.

Thank you! You also make a good point about how jarring the violence was within the movie. :)
