Unexpected Appreciation
I came across this little gem quite by accident. With the local Blockbuster closing its doors and discounting everything, I picked up a Film Movement copy of a movie called The Drummer, which is OK for what it is if you don't mind the cliches and occasional over-acting. I wasn't going to bother with the short that comes on the same DVD, but decided to play it while I paid some bills. What a thoroughly enjoyable surprise. I think I've already spent more time watching it (repeatedly) than I did the main feature. And what a hard-working genius Fredrik Emilson must be not just for writing, producing, directing, and editing the film, but for writing the operatic score as well.
Cautionary note for very sensitive parents: The film does contain one expletive, war violence involving puppets, and implied pre-marital relations between the two young lovers.
