Guess I'm one of the very few who liked this movie

The average score on Yahoo is D+. Rottentomatos gie it 18%.

But I thought it was quite a good movie. Not great, but I enjoyed watching it and I think that it is very well crafted and well acted. I'm not going to try to analyze the movie here since I'm not a good writer but I don't understand why this movie gets dumped on so badly.

I do realize that it is not a action movie and not a feel good movie so some may be turned off but why do so many reviewers hate this movie?

Thanks, Carabear. Any ideas as to why everyone is dumping on it so much?

"it is not a action movie and not a feel good movie"

Exactly! It is a feel bad movie with almost no action.

It is boring as hell for people who like action...and it is excruciating as hell for people who like to feel good.

This movie makes the viewer feel sick, sad, frustrated, confused, and really really bad.

Everyone who enjoys feeling really bad should like it I guess.

I loved that in Brokeback Mountain, not a feel good movie, it even made me sad, especially the ending, it even depressed me for days, but I love it when a movie can move me like that. If I want to feel good I would watch a comedy or a romcom, if they weren't all like crap, give or take a few. I haven't seen this one, but I do know that if there's a good story, with a strong cast, with or without action and filmed right, with good chemistry(very important), as deep as it can be, not the same driffle(?) as always, that's my movie. From The Devil's Reject to Brokeback Mountain, from The Departed to Sin City, as long as it's not told over and over again, like all these same horrorflicks, where a bunch of young people are getting butchered one by one, or you have to be like Tarantino with Kill Bill, she killed at least about 90 people in one scene with a samouraisword, unrealistic, maybe, but so great to watch.
Everybody has there own taste, there's nothing you can wright to change that. What makes a great movie, it's like art, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder......and good taste ofcause........

You posin' for pictures? Or you gonna pull the trigger? (Crime Story)

I really want to see this movie. I love slow paced movies like this and it also has lots of awesome actors.

But for the most part, American's believe movies need to have high tech special effects and explosion to be good. They don't want to think they just want high class celebraties in the same rolls over and over.

I am American so no complaining about my comment.

Zombie,

I can understand why the typical person doesn't want to pay top dollar to see a gloomy movie, they'd rather have entertainment. But why are the critics mostly dumping all over it?

Best Movie of 2008 - By far

reply

Best movie of 2008. I agree. Best I have seen this year. Depressing...well I didn't think so. Characters in depressing, desparate situations trying to keep their head above water yes. It can be hard to watch them in such emotional pain, but they keep fighting, keep moving forward eventually. I thought it ended with second chances. I didn't find that depressing.
People on these boards have complained about the dreariness of the sets and I consider the setting a character in and of itself. So stark and harsh that it is part of what formed their character and the reality that they live in. Pretty sets would have given it an unreal feel-like in Junebug. All cutesy on the surface, but....
I really loved this movie.

Man you hit it right on the head KC... True these people were in very trying times , but they were eventually able to at least begin to start overcoming all the s--- that had been dumped on them over the years. When Tara and James started formulating a bond between them, that's when everything started to change... Because of that bond, James was able to muster up the courage to stand up to his father... I think Tara finally felt like somebody really cared about her... and Joleen realized how much she missed and loved Tara after being away from her so long. The family still has a long way to go, but at least they have something positive to build on.

I had NEVER heard of this movie before I found it on DVD, used for $5. Maybe it's because I had ZERO expectations for this movie before watching it, but damn did it move me. I can relate to James more than I'll admit here and seeing him come into his own and protect that girl touched my heart. Great acting. Yes it was slow at times but that's more realistic. Life isn't a fast paced plot with twists at every turn. Well done!

Another hit by Nick. I love character driven movies and this one was a good one, well acted and good script.

I just saw it - it's a good movie. The girl playing Tara had a kind of light around her - very nice young actress and Nick Stahl has a quiet grace to his acting, reminded me why I liked Terminator 3 so much. Of course Hopper and Theron were good in their cameos. Can't believe Hopper said, "Don't look at me!"

I LOVED this movie. It was a great cast who did a fantastic job acting. I loved Annasophia and Nick. They're chemistry was great. At first, i thought their relationship would border on sexual, as most movies portray these types of characters, but it was a deep, platonic love between uncle and niece. What drew me to this movie was the music. It was very ethereal, whimsical, soft music.
