Pls explain the end + false interpretation of California

OK firstly I finished watching this movie and Im not sure that I understood the end. The brother was running away from the cops because:

a) he didn't want to rot in jail for killing his father or
B) he couldn't face his sister for 'kidnapping' her daughter as well as illegally taking her from the facility

However it doesn't make sense seeing that the cop told him he would help him out. Why run away and hide for the rest of your life?
I also don't understand the comment he made in the car about sleepwalking?

Lastly and seeing that I lived in Toronto, this was a very bad representation of 'California' in the winter. I knew instantly it was Canada as the stores, buildings, surroundings were so typical Canadian. Namely the winter and harsh main roads clearly indicated it was Canada.

SPOILERS HEREAFTER

OK firstly I finished watching this movie and Im not sure that I understood the end. The brother was running away from the cops because:

a) he didn't want to rot in jail for killing his father or
B) he couldn't face his sister for 'kidnapping' her daughter as well as illegally taking her from the facility

It was due to "A."

However it doesn't make sense seeing that the cop told him he would help him out. Why run away and hide for the rest of your life?

Well, what Detective Woll said, "Now, I can't promise you anything. But if you bring Tara back here and turn yourself in, I'll do my best for you. Alright?"

In other words, James would/will still likely be convicted of kidnapping and murder, though probably with a lesser prison sentence because his actions were arguably intended to protect Tara.

I also don't understand the comment he made in the car about sleepwalking?

Open to interpretation, I conclude James's "sleepwalking" refers to how he's had no ambition, soullessly does a small labor job then just sits alone and quietly at home until bed.

However, your feeling of confusion, a disjointedness, is presumably justified as that scene was in all likelihood shoehorned in near the very end of production to tie up the modified trajectory of the story. The project's working title was Ferris Wheel with evidence of one seemingly significant scene https://youtu.be/18LPln2nByE?t=1m10s depicted in the trailer that never occurs in the theatrical release -- which, I wish, were provided in a deleted scenes area of the DVD. Alas, no such section exists either.

Lastly and seeing that I lived in Toronto, this was a very bad representation of 'California' in the winter. I knew instantly it was Canada as the stores, buildings, surroundings were so typical Canadian. Namely the winter and harsh main roads clearly indicated it was Canada.

I've heard this complaint before, and quite frankly, I think it's very exaggerated.

Do you believe all of California resembles Los Angeles, Hollywood, San Francisco, San Diego, etc? There are plenty of towns and rural areas, including but certainly not limited to vineyards and farmland, that (in the northern region) do get covered with snow sometimes.

And, ultimately, it has no importance to the story. If it wasn't for the address on the envelope, I doubt there would be any discussion of location accuracy.
