not good

I was going to give it a "watchable" rating of 6 until everybody started acting stupid at the end.
The cenobites are not done imaginatively or particularly well. They look and act like cosplay artists at a show, sometimes cringy.

The best part is the natural looking lead with nice ass and no bra. Also liked that there are mostly night scenes with occasional rain, which suits the story, but it is done without a style.

Hellseeker was the last Hellraiser movie I saw before giving up. All before it had at least some redeeming quality. This one redeems itself by not being terrible and that is a major improvement in the franchise.

5/10

I'd give it a 6. I'd have marked it higher if they hadn't messed around with the original, if they understood and used the "pleasure is pain" theme from the original more, if the actor for Nu-Pinhead had any kind of flavour or presence at all, if they didn't use the cenobites like generic movie monsters, and if the mechanics of the puzzle box/cenobites weren't needlessly complicated.

I marked it slightly higher because of the bralessness of the main actress early on. Not only because I am a pervert but because I felt that Hellraiser isn't Hellraiser without the kink and sexuality e.g how Clive Barker added that hot BDSM scene into Hellraiser III.

reply

How did they mess around with the original? (Genuinely asking, not being rude. Been a while since I read/watched)

reply

By making it NOT the original and daring to take a (so-called) franchise with more than 10 films under its belt in a (somewhat) new direction. How dare they. Don't they know by now we'd rather stay inside our comfort zone and feel insecure whenever presented with something not already familiar?

reply

Why didn't "they" dare to make it any good though?

reply

It was far from terrible. Lots of good visual ideas (the hospital scene, the van scene...), fantastic costumes and make up, no jump scares... Which in itself is a small miracle considering how deep down the hole the whole "franchise" (such an ugly word when discussing films or any art form) was.

reply

Just look how great Rings of Power is with their "(somewhat) new direction".

Leave the fucking lore alone should be the lesson.

reply

Have you seen it?

reply

Yes, just finished.

reply

The part about the house's metal frame keeping Cenobites out is one example.

reply

I guess I just don't see what you mean by messing with the original. It's not like it claimed to be a sequel or "requel" that took something from the original film and changed or reconned it in some way--it's not canon with the original or its sequels. It's a complete remake, so nothing it does can "mess" with the original.

reply

Dude, the lead actress wears baggy stain ridden clothes (we’re talking sweat pants attire), her hair is a complete mess so she resembles a man, her lips are disgusting, there are heavy black bags under her eyes, and they smeared purple squid goo on her nose to make her look completely unf*ckable.

How on earth did she even get you slightly turned on? Better make a visit to the eye doctor soon.

reply

She's good looking out of costume, I guess they chose to make her look like shit to play up the loser junky aspect.

reply

Maybe I am into purple squid goo.

reply

The lead was really good, and yes, nice to look at--but why did her lips always look so wet?! Haha.

reply

I noticed too that they were distractingly glossy.
