Other similar series?

I would like to watch more documentaries about other artists.

Any suggestions?

I'm preparing an Art History course and have been watching a LOT of series similar to Schama's (which is excellent, even if a little heavy on the cheezy reenactments).

My first and highest recommendation is to watch all and anything by Waldemar Januszczak. He has a number of DVDs out there. I have and thoroughly enjoy EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY; THE DARK AGES: AN AGE OF LIGHT; IMPRESSIONISM; BAROQUE and ROCOCO; and GAUGUIN: THE FULL STORY. Some reviewers dismiss him as "edutainment," but that's unfair. Yes, he is entertaining--but never at the expense of the content.

ART OF THE WESTERN WORLD is another good series. Michael Wood hosts this one, which dates back to 1989. It may seem a little stodgy compared to Januszczak and Schama. And speaking of stodgy, Kenneth Clarks's CIVILISATION from 1969 is perhaps the quintessence of British stodginess, but I love it and learned a lot from that series, which spans all the humanities, not just art.

I just began working my way through the five-season box set of THE PRIVATE LIFE OF A MASTERPIECE, which is excellent so far. This series brings in a host of academics and artists to discuss just one particular work of an artist.

Those are what I have thus far. I hope the recommendations help. And I would welcome any others you or anyone has to pass along.

Ways Of Seeing by John Berger remains the standard against which all art documentaries are measured.
